BEAR IN GONTEMPT OF POLICE BADGES Thrills New Britain Party On Maine Fishing Trip Returning today from a week’s Eshing trip to Maine, Deputy Sheriff Martin H. Horwitz, Constable John 8. Recer and Policemen William S. | < Strolls and Thomas C. Dolan report- ed a successful outing, although the | %% first four days' experience was dis- couraging, nobody in the party hav- || ing been able to do anything in the way of hauling the finny rascals from their watery beds. Their luck changed, however, and all were well satisfied with the results of their de- termination to bring home some- thing besides a healthy tan. Making the trip in Constable Re- cor's automobile, the fishermen were somewhat| inconvenienced by * the breaking of an axle but they had the good fortune to have reached their camp before the accldent happened. Making repairs brought them face to face with conditions which jmpress- ed upon them the disadvafftage of being so far from the traveled way, it being necessary to do considerable telephoning before a new gxle was obtained. The axle itself cost $9 but the expense of sending for it and putting it in place ran the bill up |} to $22. Bear Outside €abin Early one morning, Policeman Do- | lan was awakened by a strange| scratching and rubbing noise against | | thg side of the cabin in which he and Policeman Strolls were Sleeping. Both officers realized that all the authority they have in New Britain | would avail them ‘naught in-this in- | { stance, for a big black bear, brows- ing about the woods, was separated /irom them by only the wall of the cabin. Reverting to type, the two police- men made their way to the wood pile near the fireplace and armed themselves with stout clubs, not round and smooth like their night- sticks but probably just s effective. Jumping back into their bunks they | lay in wait for Bruin to break down | the door without the formality of a | search warrant. The big fellow ap- parently thought better of it, -how- ever, for soon the expectant police- men heard the welcome sound ot heavy paws thrashing off into the woods and for the remainder of their stay their sleep was unbroken. Ransdell points to his long legis- lative record, and Long.sdeclares || Ransdell “has been sleeping in | Washington for 30 vears.” The governor, sought to poke fun | at the sendtor's goatee by referring to him as “Feather Duster” Rans- dell. - | Ransdell promptly made the feather dustet his campaign emblem, accepted a mammoth duster from women voters at a rally and said he would use it to “sweep clean Lou- fsiana politics.” Newspapers, fighting the gover- nor, cartoon his silk pajamas in which he received a German naval | officer on a courtesy call and charge | that the governor wishes to be “em- | peror of Louisigna.” Almost the en- | tire daily pYess of thg state opposes Long. The two men are strikingly differ- | | ent in type. Ransdell, who went to Washing- ton 31 years ago when Long was only six years old, possesses great dignity and has the manners of a Lord Ches- || tertield. He campaigns on an imper- sonal plane with a soft voice and a guarded tongue. Governor Long, bprn and bred in || the red hills of middle Louisiana, | && comes of poor farmer stock and is proud of it.
