s DARROW CONSIDERS JMERSON APPEAL Famous Lawyer to Confer On Gase of Two Squaws Buffalo, N. Y., April 20 (UP)— Clarence Darrow, who for several years has been calling himself “former lawyer,” was drawn back into active practice today by the appeal of a New York Indian chief to save two of his tribe’s women trom the penalty inflicted by the state for murder. Although determined he would not be lured from retirement at his present age of 73 and warned by the Indians that they were too poor to pay a fee, the urge to "go into | the matter” proved irresistible to | the man who has spent 48 years at | the bar defending erring humanity. | Due to Confer Today He was due here today to confer | with attorneys for Lila Jimerson and Nancy Bowen, alleged murder- | ers of Mrs. Clothilde Marchand. H= | has promised to announce whether he will join the defense staff after going over the available facts with them. Conferences are to be held at his hotel room. Darrow's Buffalo friends are con- fident he will be persuaded by the | Indians’ appeal after learning de- talls of the crime with which the two women have been charged and & part in which both have admitted. | In some respects the case they will tell him about is similar to that of Nathan Leopold and Richard Locb, young murdercrs of Bobby ¥rank, whom Darrow saved from the gallows. As in that trial, which made Darrow world famous, there is no apparent legal defense. Th: | defender must go outside the wr ten law into the realm of sociology | and psychology to make his case. Already Has Pleaded Lila Jimerson, a young woman, aiready has pleaded guilty to second degree murder, but now wants to withdraw her plea and Judge T | Bret Thorn has indicated he will grant-her a new trial. The state centends she plotted Mrs. Mar- chand's death to rid herself of a rival for the attentions of Henri | Marchand, an artist, for whom Lila had posed. Intimate relations be- tween them werc admitted by Mar- chand when he testified at her tria A mistrial was declared when thz first jury was about to receive the case becaust tubercular hemor- rhages made it impossible for th: defendant to go on. Yesterday s was discharged from the City ho pital sufficienily recovered, phy: cians said, to stand the ordeal of ’l. new trial. GRAF T0 STUDY WEATHER Dr. Eckener Says Extensive Obser- | vations on Elements Will Be Made On Trip. i Berlin, April 29 (UP)—Metecoro- | logical studies will be made on the | flight of the dirigible Graf Zeppelin | 1o South America and the United | States next month, Dr. Hugo Eck- cner said today in discussing the | forthcoming voyage. The flight will be no mere dem- onstration, he said, but will be for | the purpose of studying conditions | under which regular -air service | across the Atlantic ocean will func- | tion. The trade winds probably will be dangerous and the dirigible will | be compelled to fly in high altitudes | over the South Atlantic, he said The route will be from Seville to | Pernambuco, in Brazil, thence over | Cuba, and Florida to Lakehurst, | with possibly an intermediary land- | ing at Ha . weather permitting. The total distance from Friedrich- shafen to Brazil and back he esti- | mated at 17,767 miles, compared to about 18,630 on the flight around the world last year.
