TOBAVEINSTITUTE OF MATERNICY HERE Yisiting Nurse Association to Select May Dates The regular monthly meeting of the board of directors of the Visit- ing Nurse association was held yes- terday at headquarters, 52 Center! strect, Mrs. A. J. Sloper, president ©of the board, presiding. Mrs. George T. Kimball, assistant treasurer, presented the treasurers report in the absence of Mrs. Noah Lucas. Mrs. Kimball reported thal the organization was well within its estimated budget for the year, with | a large part of its Community Chest allotment still undrawn. Mrs. Lawrence Humason present- ed the report of the well baby con- ference work for the month show- ing a total of 14 conferences having been held in four different sections of the city, with an attendance ot 220 babies. Volunteer assistants in each of the conferences were constant throughout the month and Dr. L. B. Slysz continued his regular attend. ance. Mrs. Humason also reported about & new maternity institute, by which the Maternity Center association in New York city is bringing high ideals in prenatal and maternity care to many Public Health asso- ciations throughout the country. In Connecticut, the Waterbury Visiting Nurse assoclation has already had this institute for the Visiting Nurse staff, while Middletown and Hart- ford Visiting Nurse associations are signed for it. Mrs. Humason proposed and the board voted to hold the institute in New Britain in May, for the local Visiting Nurse association staff and any other interested nurses who would like to attend. Newington to Serve Itself Mrs. Ernest Smith, in reporting for the nurses’ committee, stated that consideration was being given to the discontinuation of New Brit- ain visiting nurse service in Maple and Elm Hill, as soon as the town of Ne gton, which now has its own Public Health Nurse associa- tion, is ready to assume the respon- sibility. Mrs. George T. Kimball, chairman of the house committee, reported the need for more room to take care of the growth of the staff, and said that more room would be almost im- perative by the fall of 1930. Consid- eration as to ways and means of securing additional space is being contemplated. ; Tt was reported that the next bi- ennial nursing convention will be held June 9 to 14, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. At that convention will mect the three National Nursing bodies and the board and committee members division of the National Organization for Public Health Nursing. Some consideratisn was given as to a candidate “com the local board of directors to attend the convention, and to the number of nurse delegates. It was learned that the visiting nurses themselves are attempting to raise enough money to send one of their own number to the convention in addi- tion to any representative whom the board of directors may send. Visits in February During February 2,298 visits were made as compared with 2,893 in February, 1929. The reduction by 800 visits is partly explained by a loss in time by the nurses through sickness, and in part by the severe nature of the illnesses nursed. The patients cared for during February have been unusually sick and have therefore required more .care and time in comparison with months when more visits were made to less acutely ill patients, the board was informed. Decreases in visits were noted in every type of service offered as compared with the same month last year, but were somewhat heavier than in January of this year. In types of illnesses nursed, in- creases were observed in the number and severity of cases of pneumonta, bronchitis, scarlet fever and severity of cases of pneumonia, bronchitis, scarlet fever and ear conditions, especially among children, Of school ehildren alone 50 were nursed and dismissed, upon recovery, to the kchool medical department, while many more are being carried for- ward for care during March. The total number of deliveries at- tended in the homes of patients also decreased last month, from 14 in January to only nine attended in Tebruary. The total deliveries for the past 11 months is 137 as com- pared with 127 for the preceeding 11 months. The members present were Mrs. Andrew J. Sloper, Mrs. James B. Thomson, Mrs. George T. Kimball, Mrs. Lawrence Humason, Mrs. Wil- liam L. Humason, Mrs. William E. ‘Parker, Mrs. William H. Rattenbury. Mrs Ernest M. Smith, Mrs. Richard L. White and Mrs, Louis W. Young. Airplanes were flown mately 200,000,000 miles approxi- in the United States last year. SKIPPY NEW BRITAIN DAILY HERALD, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12, 1930.
