NEW BRITAIN DAILY HERALD, ATURDAY, MARCH §& 1930. 7 Berlin News | BOARD OF RELIEF LOPS OFF $20,000 Final Total of Grand List Now, Stands at $8,08.120 | RESIGNATION 1§ TABLE‘ | Ask Emil Shjer- | | den to Reconsider Action—Church | school Board May Notices—Underpass Flooded Again | —Funeral of George Griffith. | The board of relief completed its | work yesterday and announced that | jts reductions this year would bej 0.000. According o Chairman| Max Sugenhime, this is the lowest total in the past four years. To- gether with additions of $625, the| total reductions this year will L $19,375, bringing the total of the grand list down to $8,025,122. f The board of relicf started work | almost a month ago, and for a lime it appeared that there would be very | few who cared to appeal from the| assessors’ valuations. During the first several meetings of the board| not over 15 townspcople asked for| reductions. The total number ap-| aling to the board this year. how- | ever, was very nearly equal to that of last year, about forty. The three| members of the board of relief, Max Sugenhime, Charles Hawkins and J.ouis Goodrich. made personal ap- | praisals of the properties under| wuestion and finally agreed on the amount of relief to he granted How trying the work of the board | of relief is may be brought out by one instance of its difticulties. In| several cases persons have been as- | segeed certain amounts but due to the fact that they are war \'wlwrm\x‘i they arc entitled to reductions. In| some cases the reductions are great- | er than the assessments and the fig urcs do not halance until a check- up is made to find the discrepancy “This necessitates going through the lists again to find the mistake a check up on it. Jollowing the report of the hoard| of relief, the finance board will meei in a session and lay the tax rate for the coming year. As there have been no outstanding needs for cither operating expenses or other pur- poses, it is thought that a tax rate similar to last year's, about 16 mills, will prevail this year. An addition al tax rate may be levied providing the school committee and the towns- people can agree on proposed ex- penditures for a new school. i Resignation is Tabled At a meeting of the school board last night the letter of resignation | of E. O. Shjerden, made public sev- eral days ago, was presented to the board by Chairman Daniel Malar- ney. No action on the resignatioa was taken but the matter was tabled until the next meeting Thursday night, when a special meeting will be held to act on it. It was learned | today that efforts may be made to| have Mr. Shjerden reconsider his action of the past week and it is| hoped by members of the hoard that he will remain them At the meeting to he held Thurs day night other plans for the relief of the congestion in the schools discussed. school | with will Le Card Game Postponed bridge party sponsorcd the Berlin Men's Bible class will no he held this evening as was an- peunced carlisr, The committee charge of the party has announced | hat the party will take place in the | Berlin Congregational church rooms "The hy | | on Monday | bac | roads | George | noon {o'clock: | ship service 7:30 o'clock. theme, | complishing ITmpossibilities.” [ board of the church will meet & | Morning service 10:45 o'clock.
