Just when it seemed to be unanimously ac- cepted that no head could be well dressed unless topped by & hat of felt, whatever the season, time or occasion, hats of straw made a bid for popularity. Midseason finds transparent straw in a new role and setting. Cleverly cut models demonstrate that the sheer hat hitherto asso- ciated with diaphonous frocks, garden parties and other “dress- ing up” occasions, have become utilitarian and even go out to business, Some of these hats are de- veloped in silhouettes that are suggestive of formal tailored or sports lines. The larger brim of the transparent hat makes it a partner for the sun-back chiffon dress. News comes from Paris that hats next season are to go Span- ish, That means berets, pom- poms and perhaps, for the artistic souls, a red rose tucked coquet- tishly in the folds of a velvet turban, Agnes paid several visits to the International Exposition at Barcelona and the results are manifest in some of her newest models. One of these is surely an echo of Carmen with its velvet, black lace and pomegranate blos- soms. One of the most discussed models is a turban fashioned from the traditional Spanish mantilla of black lace. . Chiffon turbans are blossom- ing on roof-gardens. One at- tractive version sports two ends that wrap around the head and snap at the side. Another note in the harmony that pervades the costume, both for day and eve- ning wear is the extra turban- length of matching chiffon that some of the smartest shops are suggesting when buying a plain or figured chiffon. It seems strange just now to talk of velvet hats, but those whose business it is to note and study fashion trends have al- ready told the world that it will be in velvet this Autumn, The leading designers have created their most important models of black velvet, in some cases com- bining it with lace or tulle. Vel- vet has even invaded the arena of Two Effective Hats, At Top, a Turban of Black Velvet; Below a Beige Felt with an Interesting Brim, .nport, for one model that has caught the attention of the buy- ers in Paris is a stitched cloche of that material for sports wear. Bearing eloquent testimony to the charm of the velvet turban is the delightful Agnes model here illustrated. It is cleverly draped in the manner character- istic of this brilliant designer, and will be much copied. The one- side drape is a new note. The second hat is of felt, which will be much used to stress the Spanish mode. This hat is in deep beige and is a new version of the skull cap. The brim treatment is unusually interest- ing, and is flattering to almost any type of face. It will be observed from these two models that the off-the-face hat con- tinues unchallenged in its popu- larity. THE BULLETIN BOARD By MRS, MARY D. WILSON EAR MRS. WILSON: Will you please repeat through your column the way to restore whiteness to white bath ing suits that have become yellow A sample and effective way ot restoring whiteness to garments is to soak them in cold water with cream of tartar Use a teaspoon ful of cream of tartar to a quart of water By the way, when you put white garments away for any length of time, pieces of wax placed between the folds will keep them from getting yellow. EAR MRS WILSON: ! bought an tvory and blue breakfast set, with a porcelain top tadle. 1 spilled vinegar on it and it left @& white stain where {t spilled, Is there anything you know of to remove the stains without removing the color of the table? MRS. 8. B, I presume you spilled the vinegar on the poreclain top of your table. For difficult stains on porcelain, which kerosene or lemon juice won't remove, the nest best thing {8 to wipe the stain with a soft cloth moistoned with dilute hydrochloric acid (POISON). To dilute the acid use equal amounts of acid and water Afterwards wash the stain with soapy water, and burn the cloth. In this column each week Mrs. Mary D. Wilson will answer all questions concerning the house- hold. No personal correspondence. Don’t send stanips. aW/Wmm mflaflmnmmmmw
