MALTA QUESTIONS PAPAL AUTHORITY Transfer of Monk Bfings Blow- O on Mediterranean Isle Valetta, Malta, Aug. 20 P—Re- ligious controversy again has raised its head, this time on the islands of Malta and Gozo, headquarters of the British Mediterranean fleet, The long smouldering dissension which has flared up between the Roman Catholic church and the government of Malta—a part of the British Empire—has reached an acute stage. The present controversy arose out of the recent transfer of a Maltese monk from Malta to Sicily by his ecclesiastical superior, an Italian. The government, of which Lovd Strickland is the head, consideral that the monk was being punished for his political views and refusel to permit the transfer This created such a furor in Catholic church circles on the two islands which are 58 miles from the coast of Sicily, that a church inquiry was requested. Monsignor Paschal Robinson, O. F. M., titular archbishop of Tyana was appointed apostolic delegate and sustained the positions of the bishops of Malta and Gozo who opposed Lord Strickland’s attitude.
