WULTIPLE FAMILY BLOCKS LOSE 00T Preference Is for Smaller Dwell- ings, Linder Says The average tendency of the peo- ple of New Britain in the past few years is to depart from the once- popular plan of living in large six- tenement frame buildings and live in buildings where there .are only one or two tenements, Chairman Thomas Linder of the board of as- | sessors said today. | Because of this fact persons own- ing tenement blocks have suffered losses and practically all vacant tenements are in these . buildings which have felt = the real estate slump more than any other proper- ties in the city. Under the system .inaugurated by Mr. Linder, the buildings and pro- perty were assessed according to their sound value. When the real estate slump came there was no loss in taxes because the property was not taxed according to its sup- posed value during the period when there was a building boom, Mr. Lin- der explained. It is Mr. Linder's opinion that there has not been a permit for a six-tenement frame building during the past 15 months. He said that the northwestern section where these buildings have been popular in the past has been no exception | to the rule. DOUBT TARIFF B, READY AUGUST 9 Senators Indicate Sept. 1 May Be | Nearer Right Date | Washington, July 30 (PXP—Pros- pects of rounding up a quorum of | the senate in mid-August for resum- ing the extra session is beginning to appear remote. 1f the finance committee has com- pleted its rewriting of the house | tariff measure by that time, the | membership will be on hand. Other- | wise its wont. | Answer Still Indefinite | ¥From the far away corner of the nation .and from vacationing sena- | tors are pouring inquiries into the | capifol about the prospects of the | tariff measure being ready by Aug- | ust 19, the reconvening date. The | answers of the weary secretaries are | still indefinite. The republican members of the | finance committee and who have | undertaken the rewriting of the | house tariff bill are toiling away:| long hours each day in the trrid heat | of Washington, but the work is prov- | ing & bit more severe than expected. | September 1 seems to be a beiter | Kuess than August 19 as the day | when the bill will be ready for the senate | Chairman Smoot has decided to reopen the hearings on August 7, | ust for one day, on the sliding scale | osal he is preparing as a substi- | for the flat increase in the su- | duty. voted by the house. He is| cceiving protests from the sugar | heet growers on the proposal, which | has not been made public Watson Demands Speed Despite the slow progress in the committee on rewriting of the tariff | measure, Senator Watson of Indiana, | the republican leader and the rank- | ing member of the committee, is de- manding that the work be complet- | ed before August 19. He wants to | get started in the senate with this | highly controversial legislations early | #as possible. i The long hours and hot weather | are having their effect on the repub- | lican committeemen. Writing a tariff | hill 1s bad enough, but writing it in | the withering heat of a Washington | summer is worse, especially for the nerves. Reports came from the com- mittee room of some sharp words as the members disagree over thé var- | ious duties. Nevetheless, all leave smiling as the doors are opened at 5 o'clock in the evening. It may mnot | he the “end of a perfect day,” but at least it's the end of a day A movement wxamst department and chain stores has been started in | Germany. | SUGAR MAKES | FOODS PLEASANT Good Cooks Learn to Use. Nature’s Supreme Flavorer No wonder sugar used to be con- sidered a luxury of the rich. No wonder a noted scientist says that | sugar is the greatest condimental {ood in the world. | ar’s supreme importance to is that it makes foods pleas- | ant. No man, woman or youngster can live on one food alone. To eat a great variety of foods daily the year round is to promote health, and sufinr adds flavor and delight to nearly every known food. As a hellt noted scientist says, to try to eat most foods “straight” would result in a monotonous, unpalatable diet, and you simply can't get people to cat things they don’t like. | Try a dash of sugar on your favorite cereal. Eat healthful black- | berries and other fresh fruits made | delicious by a sprinkling of sugar. Profit by the experiments of four well-known women cooking experts in New York who recently redis- covered the old art of using a dash of sugar in vegetables while they are cooking in a small amount of water. Note how the vegetable | colors, fréshness and flavors im- | prove. This little added sugar | makes eating vegetables a joy. Re- | member the value of custards, milk shakes, ice cream and other milk | | desserts in helping your family to eat enough milk. Remember stewed | fruits, candy and cookies for the end of the meal. Slimness is no longer stylish. | Good food promotes good health. |, The Sugar Institute, WEDNESDAY MORNING Cretonne Covered PILLOWS 29 Covered with Figured Cretonne A Limited Number / So Come Early $2:00 Women's UMBRELLAS . ... 25¢ LESCO CLEANER ‘Wednesday Morning WEDNESDAY MORNING CHILDREN’S LINED COATS COATS 88c Sizes 3 to 6 Made of fancy novelty checks.
