SURPLUS OF WHEAT ENDANGERS FARMER Science Shows Two Ways Out| of Present Situation Washington, July 5 (P—A flood- | tide of golden grain that might drown the farmer in his own pro- ducesmay be stemmed by scientis who are sseking to combat an over- supply of wheat. Two lines of research are under wvay at the bureau of standards to crase from the calendar that dar when there will be too much eco- nomic loss to wheat farmers. On the one hand, the economics of making paper from wheat straw is being investigated; on the other, the farmer may be shown he can supplant grain with artichokes, found to be a valuable, untapped source of the sweetest of sugars. Paper from wheat straw has been produced in Europe for more than a generation, but its use in the I'nited States has been retarded by the competition of cheap wood pulp paper. The research, initiated under charge of W. E. Emley, chief of the division of organic and fibrous ma- terials, undertakes to determine what quality paper may be pro duced, how much can be made fror a ton of straw and the cost. Results are not expected for a year. If the cost of the new pa- per is high, as compared with wood paper, it is hoped that the property of better quality will justify man- ufacture. One element that may reduce the cost is the concentration o straw, by improved harvesting methods, that makes it more easily | secured. The other alternative in the r liet program centers around th raising of the Jerusalem artichokc. the tuber of a native sunflower and once considered a weed.
