THNS ANTARCTC ISHEALTHY PLACE %u_lm London, June 14 UM—1¢ Sir Doug- las Mawson has his way in the ant. arctic, the south pole ont day will be a health resort. Sir who was on the scientific staff of the Shackleton ex- pedition in 1307 and led the Aus- tralasfan antarctic expedition of 1911.1¢6, has left London to make final rations in. Australia for a new ‘exploration of the southernmost contiment which he hopes will prove the practicability of colonizing that ico bound region. The government has lent him Bcott's old ship, the Discovery and officially the purpose of the expedi- tion is to continue the charting of the Antarctic coastline and to study the life and habits of ‘the whale. However, Bir Douglas looks be- yond the immediate objective and regards his task as the first step in the development of a new land. He is confident that colonists will fol- low the explorer (as they did in the development of America), and that in a few years the polar continent will be dotted with fishing and nun- ing settlements. It may be a far cry from such Tude gettlements to the sort of thing one expects to see in health resorts, but 8ir Douglas sees nothing illogic- al in the thought of health resorts of the future being. built there. The atmosphefe of (he pole, he points out, s totally devoid of dust and innocent of any kind of germs (which do much of their traveling on dust particles). The climate, in fact, he asserts, is “the healthiest in the world,” and the polar world a region of gorgeous beauty. Apparently the explorer's enthus- jasm for south polar climate and acenery is the contagious sort, for before he left here he received ‘scores of applications for posts with his expedition—several of them from women. His, reply to the feminine aspirants was: p “Not this trip. What we need on this expedition is men who have teen on-similar expeditions betore. Captain Davis wants sailors; [ want | scientific experts.” Captain J. K. Davis, Sir Doug- las’ second in command, will re main here with the Discovery until she is ready to sail in August. Sir Douglas will join the ship at Cape- town, YELLOWSTONE PARK OFFERS NOVELTIES New Conveniences and Sights Available or 1939 Tourists Yellowstone Park, Wyo., June 14— UP—Yellowstons national park opened its portals to the 1929 visit. ors June 1. Travel to the playgrourd has increased, yearly, and a new record is expected to be establishul in 1929, One of the new wonders park visitors may view is the unnamed geyser which suddenly broke out last July. It is the greatest exist- ing geyser in Yellowstone, an honor first held by old Excelsior and then claimed by the Giant, which has been comparatively quiet for the last pine years. Excelsior played last in 1890, The new geyser, which will be named this summer by delegates to the National Editorial association. which will hold its convention in Cheyenne in July and then tour Wyoming and the park, appears to have continued activity without in- terruption through the winter. Close observation has been impracticable under ‘winter conditions, however. Its crater, which resembles that of old Excelsior, measures 90 by 140 feet. Its tube may be measured to & depth of 74 feet below the surface, one foot deeper than the Giant, . CHAMP TEA SERVER Lorain, O., June 14.—Mrs. Amelia C.
