Simon' hke, Bridgeport Inventor, Hu“Sub"Crew Saving Device \ Apprdm Futuu to Hull by Suction—Men Escape Under Normal' Pressure * From Craft. Bridgeport, Conn, May 28 (UP) ‘e=After nearly two-scors years of inventing, Simon Lake, famous sub- marine designer, has bullt what he believes is one of the most ingenious devices to his credit, it was learned here today. 1t is called the “Remora” and is an apparatus for rescuing trapped sail- ors from sunken submarines dry und at atmospheric pressure. A amall scale model has already been tested at Brooklyn, N. Y., navy yard and is understood to have been recom- mended to the navy department. Named After Fish The Remora, Captain Sloan Dan- enhower, salvage expert and Lake's partner, explained, is a small fish that attaches itself to vessels or larger fishes by means of a vacuum protuberance on its head. This principle is utilized in Lake's invention for the possible saving of human lives. The device is to. Le used to establish connectlon betwesn & sunken submersible and the res- cue submarine “Defender,” Lake's rebuilt, 25-year-old craft. A joint resembling a large, articulating pipe is to be attached to the under side of the Defender's diving compart- ment. By means of principles which may not be revealed at this time, the lower end of the pipe is capable of clamping itself by vacuum pressure over a hatch of a sunken submarine. Water is then pumped from the “Remora” and the air pressure made to correspond with that of *he atmosphere at the surface. The hatch then may be opened and men be passed from the disabled craft to the rescue boat. Brooklyn Tests Successful In the Brooklyn tests, Danenhow- er said, the small model devilopnd a five-ton vacuum pressure, The full-size model is expected to devol- op an §0-ton pressure, enough to hold the rescue submarine tight to the sunken vessel despite the buf. feting of tides and currents, The “Remoi may be given navy tests late this summer, D First, howev the deep mea diving ability is scheduled to be tested before navul experts. By means of a compreasor chamber in the bow, divers can leave the “Defender” through a trap door while submerged near a wreck. The tests are tentatively set for June 2 near New London. Before the 8-¢ disaster, Lake, who once built war submarines for sev- eral navies, was in retirement. The 1088 of 40 lives convinced the elderly inventor that if submarines were to reach their fullest' -development, safety devices would have to be Je- veloped. Lake belleves the utility of submarines has not been fully appreciated. May Dive Under Ice Recently in’ a conversation with & correspondent, he foresaw the day when huge, cargo-carrying sub- mersibles would plow the ocean, skimming beneath the polar ice to open up new territories now inac- cessible to surface craft. The abil- ity of a submarine to navigate un- der ice may be tested next year 8ir Hubert Wilkins' projected marine dash to the pole in the fender” materializes, Taking into .partnership Danen- hower, who was test officer for the early Lake war boats, the inventor set out to develop the safety fact in the undersea craft to the perfe: tion of which he has devoted most of his life. The rebuilt “Defender” was his first accompHshment. The “Remora” is his second. He is still working. ONE FOR THE-CIRCUS London, May 28.—Circuses are passing up a good prospect in Miss Kathleen Harcourt, 15, nicknamed “Miss India Rubber.” 8he is five feet sir inches tall and by stretching she can add seven inches to her stature. Her arms will.sfretch three inches and her legs four. Other than this abnormality, which physicians believe will disappear when she be- comes older, the girl is perfectly normal. MACOMBER HEADS NEW MALE CHORUS | Tlocomtsflurl’lum— Conduclor Engaged Formation of a new male chorus | in New Britain was consummated last night at a meeting at the New Britain Trust company which was attended by 30 of those interested. Officers were elected and two weeks hence & name for the chorus will be formally chosen. The chorus at present consists of 50 selected voices. By fall, when its activities are to be- gin, the total is expected to be 60. Officers elected were: Preaident, F. W. Macomber; vice president, R. Carter, Jr.; secretary, H. Y. Stearns; treasurer, W. 8. Cannon; librarian, E. K. Bishop. The exécutive committee chosen consists of the foregoing officers and the following: John A. Ralph Britton, Andrew 8. Parsons, F. W. Latham and George Hahn. Conductor from New York The conductor chosen to lead the chorus is Roy William Steele of New York, a widely known master of the baton who directs half a dozen choruses in and near the vicinity of the metropolis. Mr. Steele is profes- sienally engaged in Hartford every Wednesday and conducts a choru Simsbury on Thursday. He will lea: New York 12 hours earlier each week and will conduct the new local chorus each Tueaday night. It is planned to give two concerts during the year, the first in Decem- ber and the second in the spring. Ten rehearsals probably will be re- quired for each, so that rehearsals for the December concert will begin in 8eptember. The place of rehearsal has not been decided upon, but probably will be in 8t. Mark's parish hall. A committee to formulate a con- stitution and by-laws also was ap- pointed last night consisting of E. F. Upham, chairman; Henry Schauffier and George Ward. This committee will report at the next meeting of the organization to be held at the New Britain Trust company on Mon- day, June 10. Macomber's Idca Formation of the new chorus re- sulted after months of quiet work by Mr. Macomber. Being identified with various other musical activities in the city he came to the conclu- sion that many good male voicey hereabouts were pot recelving suf- ficient outlets for their inclinations. Their unification into & new male ohorus, existing musical organizations in- directly and be a pleasure to the in- dividual singers and a source of gratification and pride to the gener- al public. ‘With the aid of musical frien he made a list of available mule voices and came to the conclusion that a chorus of merit was possible and that organizing effort would re- sult successfully. Approaching each of the singers individually he was vastly encouraged by the unanimous faith they expressed in the venturs. Being aware that Conductor Steele visited Hartford weekly, he inter- viewed that gentleman as to his will. in, to add the local chorus to his list, and received a favorable re- sponse, The meeting last night was the climax of the organization per. fod, and almost every detail discuss- ed was settled unanimously, Y NEAR BEER Phlladelphll May 28.—Mrs. Ida May Peterson and her hushand at. tended a party.
