ENVOY TO GERMANY 1S 7 YEARS 0LD Hindeaburg Congratulates dacob Gould Schurman on Birthday Berlin, May 22 UM—Pregident Von Hindenburg and numerous prom- inent Gierman officials today were congratulating Jacob Gould Schur- man, American ambaasador, on the oceasion of his aeventy-fifth birth- day. From Heidelberg came a birthday gift for its honorary citizen, a port- folio containing two rare color prints of the city by Johann Jacob Struedt. The ambassador spent the day at Halle and made an address before the Kant society on the subject of “Kant and Peace.” The American ambassador recelved a surprise birthday present by being made honorary member of the society which is made up of distinguished scientists and scholars. Several newspapers comment on the ambassador's carcer and his great popularity in Germany. They are sold to the posts of the Ameri- ean Legion, with the disabled men [ receiving the entire proceeds. Voluntary contributions from 10 cents up are received by the can- vassers and the profit realized by the American Legion posts is devoted to a fund which is used for welfare work of Legion posts and American Legion auxiliary. From President Hoover down to the lowest town or village official, approbation of the sale is given an- nually and the fact that all of the manufacturing concerns in this city through their officials, have assired the Legionaires of cooperation in the sale of poppies shows that the cause is deemed a worthy one. The flower itself is the offical * memorial flower of the Aemrican Tegion. It was adopted at a national convention several years ago because of its power to bring visualation to the people of this country of the fields whereon the city's sons gave their lives in the World War.
