* POSSRLE SITES OF GARDEN OF EDEN - Sir Willam Wikox Fuvers One Not Prelerred by Bagdad Natives Babdad, Irak, May 10 UP—Beek- ers for the site of the Biblical Gar- den of Eden are recommended to direct their quest to Irak, where in the ‘valley of the Euphrates they may have choice of three places which have claims to be the genu- ine and original Paradise. If ome were to ask the man in the atreet cither in Bagdad or Basra for information as to the first home of Adam and Eve, he would unfailingly be directed to Kura, at the con- fluence of the Euphrates and the “Pigris rivers, as the exact spot. Such indeed is the ancient tradition of the eountry. Another place, however, is be- leved by S8ir William Wilcox, who apent & nlmber of years in Irak on {rrigation works, as the fair land in- habited by the first parents. This apot lies between th Euphrates and the Tigris, near Ur of the Chaldees, the birthplace of Abraham. Sir Willlams' Belief Supporting his belief, 8ir William quotes Genesis, Chapter 2, Verse 10: *4 river went out of Eden to water e Garden, and from thence it was parted and became into four heads;" and verses 5 and € of the same ehapter: “The Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth . . o« But there went up a mist from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground.” Sir Willlam advances the opinion that the word “mist” is an inexact translation, and that the proper ren- dering would speak of natural irri- sation as opposed to artificial wa- tering. This spot near Ur is said to be a land formation where a river was “parted and became into four heads” ! Also, says 8ir William, it is a marshy plain, where water is plen- tiful throughout the 12 months. Sup- port is lent to the belief that this was the site of the Garden of Eden by the fact that for a plain, the des- ignation, “Eden,” was used by the earliest inhabitants of Babylon. The third region which is pointed out by natives as the site ‘of the garden is the tract to the south of it, where at one time the delta of the FEuphrates began and the river was divided into four arms. This would seem to agree with the exposition in the second Chapter of Genesis, It is, moreover, naturally watered all the year around.
