FRANKLIN SOUARE | GOES 10 POLLS Prelerence Is for Gas Station Rather Than Lunch Cart on Yacant Lot SOME OPPOSED 70 EITHER|| Ald. Jobnson Shows Council Killed Fuel Supply Stand On the question of choosing be- 8 tween a gasoline station and a lunch &K cart on the Standard Oil Co. lot at the corner of Pearl street and Franklin 8quare, Attorney Donald Gaffney. representing the American Hardware Corporation, and Grand Knight Edward J. Dailey of Daly Council, Knights of Columbus, went - on record in favor of the former at & 'meeting of the ordingnce commit- tee last night. John Johnson of Dwight street, representing the First Lutheran church, Miss Bing- ham and Franklin 8quare, expressed Opposi tion to ‘the gasoline station and th lunch cart, but said, in reply to questions by the committee, that if || either must be chosen, the prefer- ence would be for the gasoline sta- tion. A communication was received from St. Matthew's Lutheran church opposing a gasoline station. Nobody spoke in favor of a lunch cart and |9 the committee voted to report to the common council the opinions ex- pressed at the hearing. Alderman J. Gustave Johnson, chairman of the committee, had a copy of the council minutes of two years ago, showing that the proposal | | to permit the erection of a gasoline station on the site was killed, and the members agreed that in order to bring it before the council again it must originate just as though it had never been under discusmon, and go through the usual channels. The committee voted to recom- med a change in the building or- dipances to permit two stores in- stead of one in tenement houses. Building Inspector Rutherford told the committee that the bullding commission favors the change, al- though the recommendation origin- ated in the common council. Ix-Councilman Alexander J. Ol- ron said the representative of the Swedish Bethany church delegated tozattend the meeting had not put | in'kn appearance, so he conveyed to the committee the stand of the church in opposition to a gasoline station and a lunch cart. ed to make a choice, however, the chyrch would prefer the gasoline stafion to the lunch éert FLAMES ON WY, TON RAZE SUMMIT HOUSE { High Wind and Lack of Water Make Firemen Helpless—Valuable Telescopes Saved. Holyoke, Mass., May 3 (®—A blackened chimney was all that re- mained today of the Mt. Tom Sum- mit house, for years a favored ren- dezvous of Mt. Holyoke college girls and well known to residents of west. ern Massachusetts and visitors from elsewhere. A fire which swept the big four etory hotel last. night made quick work of the noted structure. A heavy gale and the helplessness of firemen in the face of inadequate water sup- ply reduced the building to smoul- Gering embers in little more than two hours, The blaze atarted in the observa- tory on the fourth floor from an un- determined cause. Four telescopes valued at $4.000 were saved. Loss was placed at $50,000. Dr. H. L. Hastings, treasurer of the Mt. Tom Railroad association which owned the house and the cable rallroad which constitutes the only approach to the summnt, said a temporary rtructure would be started today to care for this scason's guests, The first summit house was erect- ed in 1897 and burned in 1906. The tiructure which was razed last night ““was erected in 1901.
