ATOMS ARE RIGHT AND LEFT HANDED Like Human Beings, They Work With Diflerent Sides Ithaca, N. Y., April 26 P—Right and left handed patterns of atomic arrangements in molecules, are ex- plained in a special course in chem- istry this semester at Cornell uni- verstiy. ‘The course is by Prof. F. M. Jaeger, non-resident lecturer in chemistry, who comes as a visitor from the government university of @Groningen, Netherlands. There are substances built up by equal members of the same atoms, differing only in configurations an- alogous to the differences between two gloves of a pair. On first sight this appears to be an unimportant detail, but it is nor. For, although the most common commercial properties of right and Jeft handed phases are the same, they differ widely in their effects upon the human body. As an example, Dr. Jaeger says & synthetic form of nicotine exists, quite different in its effects from that present in smoking tobacco. This nicotine is found to be two-fold lcss poisonous than the form pro- duced by nature. The molecular pat- tern in the natural product is left bhanded, while the synthetic nico- tine has its atoms arranged in a right handed form. The synthetic, low poison nicotine has been made only in laboratories. Dr. Jaeger says it i3 too difficult and expensive by present methods for commercial production, “And,” he adds “perhaps its ef- fect would be so. different that to- bacco users would not care for it.” Pr. Jaeger is teaching graduate students how this right and leit handedness exists in most products of nature; how by it frequently two substances of quite different effects are produced, although they composed of precisely the constituents. Thus 't happens that one such substance has a sweet taste and the other is insipid. One has quite a different odor from the other. Nature is prone to make only one variety, but almost never hoth. Chemists, hewever, sometimes dis- cover methods of making the sup- presscd kind even for commercial | use. Occasionally are samc the synthetic sub- stances develop important medical uses. A vemarkable instance is belladonna. The natural product, | which is right handed, strongly en- larges the pupil of the eye, and is used to increase the luster of the feminine eye. But the left handed form. which can be made in the laboratory, has no cffect on the iris.
