Speaking of Sports ‘The “iron hand” is starting to show in the boxing circles in thia state. Following the adoption of the new code of rules governing the amateur boxing spirt in Connecticut and the passage of the law placing the sport under the dominatoin of State Athletic Commissioner Thomas E. Donohue, here has started a rush of former simon-pures to enter the pro ranks. Johnny Clinch is the first of the New Britajn amateurs to announce that he was turning pro. He meets Ray Dolan of Waterbury, another former simon-pure in Waterbury Thursday night. A whole flock of boys who have been fighting in amateur tourna- ments all over the state, hailing from every community where the amateur boxing game has flourished are about ready to fiip over into the Pro ranks and Connecticut is due to see plenty of new talent shows in the coming outdoor season. Commissioner Donohue plans to set right the question of amateur titles immediately. He announced today that a state title tournament | would be staged in New Haven on May 15 and 16. Notices to this ef- fect have been mailed out to several hundred boxers about the state and & rush of applications for entries is || expected to follow. The commissioner will supervise all details in connection with the tournament and those winning in each of the weight classes will hold their championships for one year. The new rules will all be in force, Including the draw system of making | matches and the two-minute round clause. Al houts will terminate at the end of the third round and a de- cision will be rendered by the referee. Johnny Willis who has been of- ficiating at local amateur boxing shows conducted by the Stanley A C.. has made an application for a position as a member of Commis- sloner Donoh ie's staff of referees. We suspect that there won't be any | question of Johnny's getting a licens hecause he 18 one of the rare old- timers who is still active in the referceing game. All other officials in connection Wwith the bouts will all be required to take out licenses from the state hoxing commission. Thix includes time-keepers, seconds and all others. Only two men, bona fide seconds, | will be allow>d to be in the corner of each fighter. Tt may take some time hefore the entire list is straightened out but after the system gets working, nc- cording to Commissioner Donohue, he expects that there won't be any question ahout the amateur and pro- fessional status of all Loxers in the state of Connecticu, The next boxing show for this city is carded for Friday night under the auspices of the Stanley A.
