. [==] NEW BRITAIN HERALD [=-»] | 'NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, TUESDAY, APRIL 2, 1929. RUTH BRYAN OWEN SHINGS INTO WORK Florida Representative Estab- lishes Headquarters At Capital BY MARTHA DALRYMPLE Associated Press Staff Writer Washington, April 2 (®—DMrs. tuth Bryan Owen, who prefers to a recognition on her own merit rather than as the daughter of Wil- liam Jennings Bryan, has spent a tlustered two weeks, preparing her- «c1f to represent the fourth Florida district in the seventy-first congress. Her office in the house office Luilding has been in running order for more than two wecks, and prob- ably will continue to be a clearing | the the liouse for Florida problems for remaining two weeks, before special session begihs. She has painstakingly compiled a list of the pressing nceds of the residents of her district, gathered during the months she spent cam- paigning up and down the eastern coast of Florida and through an extensive correspondent with state jraders. With this in hand, she had zone to the heads of government (departments and gotten a list of tivities conducted by the federat ncies which might help solve the | yroblems. By comparing the two, has found out the nceds for which little or no federal aid has 1icn provided, and these will be the points on which she will try to en- sineer legislation during the next regular session. Has Home Secret: ary An innovation she has established | in the Florida delegation is the post- ing of a home secretary at a point \cry nearly in the center of the long stretch of coast line that comprises | her distriet. This secretary is in close touch with the residents, makes frequent trips to the agricul- tural districts, little coast ments, big cities, scattered islands off the southern tip, one of which is 60 miles from the mainland. He reports directly to Mrs. Owen, and keeps her constantly in touch th conditions in her home state. She in turn keeps him supplied witn all reports and bulletin~ issued by the government touching ,on any thing that cven remotely concerns her district, In addition, this tall, bobbed-hair- ed representative is sponsoring a high school citizenship contest 1n cach of the 18 counties of her dis- trict. The high schoel population ot each county will take a popular vote to select the boy and girl who Liest represents the ideals of good citizenship in the county. The 36 winners will be given a trip to Wash- ington next summer, Lives Near Old Home Mrs, Owen has just taken an apartment on Maryland avenue, two blocks from the capitol and one | hiock from the old house where she Jived as a girl when her father was scerctary of state in the Wilson ad- ministration. Her enthusiasm over her duties in the” capitol is almost cqualed by her enthusiasm in redec- orating her new home in the early American period. She has had sent from her home at Palm Beach dif- ferent pieces of furniture and orna- ments that fit into the style of her new home. In the fall, her cight-year-old youngest daughter will come from T'lorida to join her in Washington, but her mother will continue to keep the Florida home running while shc E s in Washington or makes ex- tensive trips over her district. A campaign for a new building, which {has been under consideration for |some time, was taken yesterday when letters were sent out to mem- bers and others interested, announc- ing that New Britain soon will be asked to provide the needed plant. The letter was as follows: “We have needed a new building fof a good many ycars. Everyone at all acquainted with the conditions has recognized the need; | have waited until the necessities are 180 urgent that action cannot longer | be indefinitely postponed. In 1913 we planned to launch a building campaign, but stcpped aside that the Young Women's Christian Associa- tion might secure funds for {building. In 1917 we were again [prepared to take up the matter in {carnest, but the war stopped us. | Since then we have waited while the | Boys' club, the hospital and othe laudable welfare organization sought and secured the support they sorely nceded, and have balanced our claims for consideration against those of others, in order that the | best interests of New Britain might | be served. | “But we have reached the limit {of what we can do to fill our niche |in the community. We are not prop- |erly serving the rapidly increasing |army of young men and boys who | fall within the range of our work. 1f we are to be worthy of New Brit- |ain's support we must have a plant | in which we can care for the present day work for which the Young Men's Christian Association was created. It is not fair to the city to let present conditions continue a rect them. “And so, we are soon going fo ask New Britain for the plant we { must have if we are to do our work well. We want you to be prepared to render such feel that you can, when the time for |action arrives. In the meantime | we are perfecting plans for presen- you of them as they are developed %0 that you will know the facts and will be in a position to give us your !uppnr'. “You will hear from us more def- llmmy later, But please note this: On This Remarkable Offer Monad Waterproof High Gloss Finish (Enamel) Dries in a Few Hours Look at These Modern Colors SEA GREEN, WHITE.
