[ Speaking: of Sports LYY T YV YR . For the third consecutive year, the Liristol high school basketball team will leave tomorrow to take part the national interscholastic basket- Hall tournament conducted by the University of Chicago. Two years ugo, the team met with little success and was eliminated in its first game. last year, the team went thropgh its first three games and met defeat in its fourth. The enthusiasm shown by Bristol people in this trip of their high school quintet is a fine thing. Over 2,000 donations, ranging from five cents to twenty-five dollars have been received. To the people of liristol and to the people of the state| in general, nothing should be too good for the Bristol players. The team goes with the hest wishes of every basketball fan and lacker of high achool sports. To ‘Tominy Monahan, coach of the team, goes the honor of being the man responsible for the fine success of his court crew. We wish them luck with the heartiest kind of feeling and hope that the team will return home after the tournament with the palm leaves c¢f the national cham- pionship decorating its brow. Plenty of interest is centered to- night in the battle for the state championship between Bristol and New Britain basketball teams. The outcome is about as uncertain as nything in the sports line this sea- son. Despite what has gone on before this season, the two quintets are so Lkeenly matghed that the slighest «~dge gained in tonight's game might mean victory, Tt is true that New Britain took the last game on Bris- tol's home floor but fans here must remember that Bristol took two s from New Britain in this This apparently shows that the old bugahoo of a team having an ad- antage because it is playing on its llome floor, hasn't case of thege two teams. New Brit- in won its only two games of the son from Bristol on Bristol's liome floor. Dristol returned the compliment by taking two of the contests played at the Stanley Arena. There has been some tall ahout another game after tonight's battle. Conrpilation of averages tend fo W that the state title will not he decisively won no matter which team wins. This matter will neces- sarily have to b& decided on after tonight's game The biggest crowd of the scason Wil be on hand tonight. Even the third row seats in the gallery have all been sold. Neither team will liave a majority of rootcrs present Lecanse Bristol will have as many rtisans on hand as will New Bnt- win. There certainly will he a hot time in the old home town tonight. One game has been added to the schedule of midget division city has- Jietball tournameni games for Mon- y afternoon. They won't be afraid to throw the ball in there with this gang back of them.” Shotton imicated today that the cra B expe are ige, Willonghhy, Fergus Me- iraw, Ttoy and Collins, right hand- rs, and Sseetland and Milligan left handers. n, H 4 West Palm Beach, Fla., ) whose playing cockles of M r heart, will get a chanc base for the St Louis Browns today. Few fans of tion remember at the zenith of present genera- om Cotter. He was his game when Jean was breaking in and there was | no room for argum when hi name was mentioned. He could hit pass, skate and block, but his fort was his driving power. From anvy part of the rink he could smash @ Lall with terrific force and his control was something to be ad- mircd. Few players of his time had the courage to block his hits. They preferred to stand off to onc side and leave the goal tender to his fate. More often than nof. when Cotter got an open shot, the bull swished the “curtains,” and when misscd, the bang of the ball aguinst the wooden banks sounded like dozen rifle shots hitting the sun target together Of the stars in roller hockey who come to the front in tie pust ten years, none has the driving pow- er of Arthur “Kid” Williams, tew players who ever wiclde curved stick were better floor work- {ers than Steve Pierce, but whether this pair deserves to be placed in the class with Jean or lined up close behind hin is @ moot question.
