K.’y ROAD AND BRIDGE Inspects New Highway Projects Proposed by City Preliminary sketches of a propos- ed alternate Mighway to eliminate curves and intersections between Allen street and Gilette's corner and of an underpass at South street cross-over, were delivered today to Highway, Commissioner John A. Macdonald who promised immediate steps looking %o operations on both projects. Commissioner Macdonald was ac- companied on & tour of inspection by Mayor Paonessa, Chairman George R. Dobson of the board of public works, City Engineer Philip A. Merian, George J. Molleur and Simon Nelson of the engineering staff. The highway plan as drafted by the engineering department .ollows a route which would make it neces sary to remove the bungalow home of Mr. and Mrs. Gottfried Linden of Sefton Drive. Commissioner Mac- donald will endeavor to swing this highway to the left to avoid this and believes a satisfactory route can be drawn up. He found no other ob- jection to the plan as submitted. If the new roadway is to be con- structed, it will come in the form of a continuation of Hillcrest ave- nue, curving slightly to a terminal at Gilette's corner, a distance of about one and one-half miles. Con- siderable cutting and filling will be necessary. Assurance has been given by the owners of nearly all of the property to be crossed that rights of way will be given gratis. When the highway is built, the city will take over the other alteruate route as a city street, and the state de- parment will maintain the new. The underpass plan scemed to impress the commissioner because of the small amount of property damage likely to result. Tt is pro posed to begin the decline several hundred feet to the north of the present crossover, dropping to meet Stanley street near the Towers brick yard. Mr. Macdonald saw possibilities of several other schemes and he will have his plans transcribed onto tracing paper for the purpose of ob- taining cost figures, he promises. —ee ENTERTAINS ON BIRTHDAY A birthday party was given in honor of Miss Ella Stringham at her home on §52 East street last eve- ning. R JOHN AT INAUGURATION John Coolidge will attend the in- 2uguration exeroises at Washington next Monday but instead of accom- panying Mr. and Mrs. Coolidge, will view the exercises as a member of the staff of Governor John H. Trum- bull of Connecticut. His plans for his stay in Washington are unknown but it 18 expected that he will stop at a hotel with the governor's statf and not at the White House. 'VARNISH! B P. S.
