CONGRESS ENDS IN LESS THAN WEEK Farm Reliel and Tarill Revision G0 to Tist Session Washington, Feb. 27 P—8ix days and the 70th-congress will be his- tory, and already congressional lead- ers are occupied by the question marks of the next session—farm re- lief and tariff revision. Both the senate and the house, however, had measures confronting them today that promised to drive away for a time the question of what to do for the farmer and how much toghtening to do on the nu- nterous and intricate provisions that make up the tariff laws. Both houses were faced by a problem that like the proverbial and pestiferous cat keeps constantly coming before con- greas in one guise or another—pro- hibition. - Jomes Bill in House In the house this problem took the form of the Jones bill which would increase at the discretion of the Judges the penalty for first violations of the dry laws. The measure passed the senate after a rousing debate, principally between Ileed of Mis- souri, and Borah of Jdaho. 1€ it passes the house and is slgned by the president, a person who violates the Volstead act for the first time may be given a sentence of five years in prison, or a $10,000 fine, or both. Prevalent opinion was that it had a good chance of being approved by the house. tempered by the knowiedge that it would be strenuously opposed in some quarters. In the senate the sccond deficiency bill awaited consideration and with it there was the question of what 1o [do about the proposed $24,000,000 for prohibition enforcement, This [proposal has had its precipitate ups nd downs in its brief carcer. It was idded as an amendment by the sen- te to the first deficiency bill, but its velght caused that measure fo sink o rise no more in the legislative ca.| Senator Harris, of Georgia, has nnounced that he would propose hat the $24.000.600 be added fo the pill now before the senate, ttee PPressure begun to lift from Practically all impor- ant bills that are to be passed on t this scssion have been reported nd there has been a corresponding et down in he house ways is an excep- lation of its work.
