NEW BRITAIN DEFEATED BY ALBANY —BARNEY DOHERTY MAY BE OUT FOR CHAMPIONSHIPS TO BE HELD HERE MARCH 2—BASKETBALL TEAM FACES RUSSIAN QUINTET SATURDAY BATTLE IN GARDEN TOMORROW NIGHT STATE WRESTLING TITLE MATCHES Haven, Bridgeport and HERE MARCH 2‘ Teams From Watertown, Waterbury Hartford, New | New Britain to Compete— Hardware City Crew Anxious to Repeat Victories of Former Years—Local Boys Have Had Enviable Records Iy Last Two Seasons—Individual Victor- ies and Defeats. March 2, matches . A. wrestling On Saturday, for the state Y. M. ! championships will be staged at the New Britain Y and teams from Wa- tertown, Waterbury, Hartford, New Haven and Bridgeport will be en- tered. The pick of the Y. M. C. A. teams from these various associa- tions in the state will be sent here and some of the stiffest competition in recent years is expected. New Britain, reknowned in athle- tic circles for the ability of her sons in football, track, basketball and Dbaseball, can also take pride in the accomplishments of her representa- tives on the wrestling pads. 0ld-timers can well remember the activity of Norbeck, the giant Nor- wegian, in his bouts in New York with John Piening, the butcher boy; Alfred Anderson and Westergren as strong men and wrestlers and in later years, Bonefant, Burdick, Her- cules and Al Ventres in the profes- sional game. In the amateur ranks, Charles Sahrbacher made a name. for him- 1 when he lost the chance to be- eome national champion in the 135- pound class by dropping & decision in the finala in the Newark tourna- ment. Fred Stingle, Fred Guite and Fied Bradley, all were simon-pures but they were counted among the top notchers in grappling circles. Today, New Britain's prestige on the mat in the amateur ranks rests upon the shoulders of budding youngsters in the Y. M. C. A. who have yet to become known to the public through the procuration of a reputation. Several of the members i of the Y. M, C. A. team have met and defeated the best in the state. Some have won state amateur titles twice, others once. This year, the team will de its best to bring the state title to the Hardware City. The New Dritain “Y" wrestling team won the state champtonship in 1926. In 1927, the local team was tied in the number of, bouts won with Hartford and in 1928, the crew ran second to Hartford in the final meet in Waterbury. The record of e team in the past two years is wix wins, one draw and three defeats in a total of 10 dual meets, in these meets, New Britain de- foated Waterbury three times and t to the Brass y matmen twice. + scored u vietory over Holyoke, n one from and drew one with i Talt school team and won one feein and lost one fo Hartford. \fter summing up the record of th team. what about the men who make up the squad. their individual records in matches won and .ost. “fhree of the men on the local team this year have won state titles in their welght classes.
