CAUGHT IN MAINE Imhpiundlf lnwmcfigm md. Me., Feb, 19 (M-—Three alleged Tum runners were’ arrested near Kittery yesterday by’ prohibi- tlon agents who seized two automo- biles and 50 gallons of alcohol. An unidentified man and a woman said to have accompanied the men, es- caped. The three men, Guiseppe Natoli, I'rank Funave and Antonio Marino; all of Lawrence, Mass., were brought here for arraignment before Federal Commissioner Gould. = Copspiracy charges against ‘Natoli and Funare were continued until tomorrow. Ma- rine waived hearing and gave bail| for his appearance in April. The arrests were made by Henry P. Weaver, in charge of prohibition enforcement in Southern Maine, and Agent Arthur England. After sub- duing Funare and Marino in the first machine and handcuffing them to- gether, the agents turned to the fol- lowing car. Natoli, alighting, rus?\-' ed at the agents in anger, they said. At that moment Funaro and Ma- rino attempted to escape in the first machine, but this was frustrated hy Weaver who smashed the car win- dow with his pistol butt and shut off the motor. At the same time Na- toli fled into the woods and his ma- chine, containing the man and wom- an escaped toward Kittery. In was later found abandoned in that town. Natoll was discoverea later by Weaver and a posse in a patch of swamp land. In the struggle to ar- rest him both Natoli and Weaver were slightly injured. CONTRACTS 10 BE FOR SINGLE YEAR Speculate on How Near Babe, Ruth Is to Trail's End New York, Feb. 19 (UP)—The latest fad of the baseball world is the game of guessing how near Babe Ruth is to the end of the trail, It all started quite innocently enough when Secretary Edward G. Barrow of the Yankees casually dropped the information that the Babe's future contracts will be for one meason each. Ruth's present contract which calls for $70,000 a year will have run its three year course at the end of the present weason, Clark Griffith, “The Old Fox,” of the Washington Senators, put in the Liggest rap at the home run king when he allowed the information to be broadcast that he would not trade Goose Goslin, American-league batting champlen, for Ruth. Without saying so, Griffith tacitly implied that Ruth is practically | “through” as a ball player right now. Griffith does pot infer that Goslin is fn a class with Ruth as a drawing card, but believes “The Goose” will play rings around “The Babe” the coming season. Ruth is 35, Goslin 29, Ruth's legs gave him trouble last season; Goslin's throwing arm almost ren- déred him helpless as an outfielder. Geslin's arm may be well the com- ing season, but Ruth’s legs can hardly be any better than they were ayear ago. ' After I“. Griffth’s estimate of the two as ball players may not be far amiss. Goslin outhit Ruth by 56 points last season, batting .379 against Ruth's .323. A prominent but unnamed physi- cal director has informed one of | fancy” ! person showing the pictures. New York's leading baseball writers that “this will be Ruth’s last year.” “I predict that the decline of Ruth will be one of the outstanding happenings of the baseball season,” thls writer quotes the authority who is’ familiar with Ruth's physical condition. “Ruth’s legs have started to go. Only Ruth’s miraculous body and stamina have kept him going. Almost any other man would be down in a class B league by this time.” Ruth’s great showing in the last world series, in which he and Geh- rig dominated the play of the ‘Yankees, is cited by this anonymous physical director as another indi- cation of his impending decline. “A rocket flares brightest just| before it passes out,” he is quoted | as having said. “For fou) games he | was & throwback to the old days. | He hobbled heroically on and for- | got his injuries in one of the marvel- ous athletic exhibitions of all time Piles are caused 1 in the lower bowe remedy can remove the cause, That's why alves and cutting fail. He'll alwa; able to hit apnd I'll be willing to uc- rifice speed in the outfield for his batting power.” ; ‘Ruth has completed 15 seasons in the major leagues. He was with the Red 80k for six years from 1914 to 1919, serving largely as a pitcher. He became a regular outfielder when he joined the Yankees in 1920. Ruth's batting record since 1920 follows: 1920, .376; 1923, .393; 1926, .372; IMPERIAL RUSSIAN JEWELS FOR SALE Grand Dake's Widow Offers Them for Less Than $200,000 London. They are the property of the widow of Grand Duke Nicholas. The grand duchess is a sister of the queen of Ttaly and it was from the Italian court the two gems .were brought to England with a request to Commander Locker Lampson, M. P., a friend of the grand duke to assist in their disposal. The gems originally belonged to the Empress Catherine. One is a 15 carat rose diamond for which it is said the late Emperor Nicholas refused an_ offer of 170,000 pounds sterling. The other is a ‘17-carat emerald. The paper says the grand duchess wants between 50,000 and | 60,000 pounds sterling (less than $200,000) for the two. The grand duke and his wife, after exile from Russia with the suc- cess of the Red revolution, were forced to maintain their small resi- dence and semblance of & court | with proceeds from occasional sales | of gems which they were able to carry away with them. TALK ON SIR GALAHAD One of ‘thé most interesting pro- grams of the year was enjoyed by the Pinnacle club at the meeting| which was' held in the Y. W. C. A. club rooms last evening. Copies of the Abboy panel pic- tures from the Boston public li- brary, “The Guest of the Holy Grail,” were shown. The pictures, 15 in number, show the range of the life of 8ir Galahad from his “In- to the “Golden Tree.” The story of the quest was given by the The oath of knighthood from Tennyson was read as an introduction to the pictures. The girls also enjoyed a talk on current events, music and a social hour.
