LEVIATHAN 15 NOW PRIVATELY ONNED Osce Troop Tramsport, Huge Cralt Starts Another Career Washington, Feb. 15 (P—Sale yesterday by the shipping board of the Leviathan and ten other ships to P. W. Chapman, Inc., for $16,- 300,000 marks the beginning of an- other chapter in the already colorful history of the famous liner. Built by a German firm and selzed by this government shortly after the United States entered the ‘World War, the glant craft was used | in transporting troops to and from France until after the signing of the armistice. Then she was remodeled | into a palatial passenger ship and! turned over to the shipping board | for operation. | Vessel Afioat With her sale to the Chapman in- terests, she now becomes the flag- ship of the first privately owned American fleet to compete for the lucrative North Atlantic passenger trade. The Leviathan still is the largest steamer afioat, although a bigger vessel is now being built in England. Final action in the transfer by the shipping board of the United States lines, of which the Leviathan is a part, and the flve passenger-cargo ships of the American Merchant | line, was taken yesterday shortly | after the senate commerce commit- tee anounced that it would not in- terfere with the sale. Transfer of the physical proper- | ties involved in the sale will proba- bly be made to the Chapman firm within two weeks. GOVERNOR KOALER FACES FIRST TEST New Wisconsin Esecutive Ac-| cused of Buying His Office Sheboygan, Wis., Feb, 15.—(#—In his home county, Walter J. Kohler, who became governor after a year in polictics, faces a test of his right to hold office because of alleged exces- sive campaign expenditures. Kohler, wealthy manufacturer, I known as & regular republican, de- feated the La Follette progressive republicans. It is that faction which | challenges his right to the govern- or's chair. Governor Kohler took of- fice January 7 for two years. Upon the findings of a special ! prosecutor in & John Doe inquiry, who sald Kohler spent “far in excess of $100,000” in the primary, pro- ccedings have been inaugurated. The governor claims he spent leas than the $4,000 allowed under the ~ortupt practices act, and organiza- tions working n his behalf listed campaign costs at $91,000. John W, Reynolds, the attorney general, has named Walter D. Cor- rigan of Milwaukee and Harold M. Wilkie of Madison as speclal prose- cutors of the action. They were di- rected to institute the suit in She- boygan county. Edward Voigt, who retired from congress two years ago after serving 10 years as a leading La Follette progressive, presides over the Sheboygan court. The governor calls the action an effort to embarrass him. He placed | the matter in the hands of his per- sonal attorneya. Xohler came from political ob- ncurity to become the regular repub- lican candidate for gubernatorial nomination, and to defeat Gov. Fred Zimmerman and Rep. Joseph D. ‘Beek. The La Follette strength, with | Senator Robert M. La Follette and Benator J. J. Blaine leading, it was thrown behind Beck. Kohler kept up a rapid speaking | campaign by traveling in an air- plane. Four progressives, Philip La Fol- lette, brother of the senator; Glenn D. Roberts, a state senator: Alvin C. Rels, progressive floor leader in the assembly, and Willlam E. Evjue. editor of the Madison Capital Times, petitioned the attorney general to be- gin action. MUSCLE SHOALS ROW BEGAN CENTURY AGO Alabama Wanted Canal Buflt in 1837 Around Spot Now Soufht for Power Project. Washington, Feb. 15.—(P—After all, there is nothing really new about | Muacle S8hoals and the problem of | what congress should do about it. As early as 1827 it was consider- ed to be a problem national in char- acter and deserving of federal funds. O1d records reveal that in that year congress was asked by Representa- tive Moore of Alabama to authorize « canal around the shoals. It was de- | cribed as a project of last import- | ince to the states of Alabama, Ken- | . Ohio, Mississippi, Loulsiana | he western part of Virginia. | ims that it was a national prob- | were based on the fact that cot- | on growers from these states an- | y shipped from 50.000 to 55,000 | of cotton down the Tennessee | iver through the shoals, and though | the distance was only 25 to 30 miles | the transportation costs exceeded $27.000. It was contenfled that the | proposed canal would save this | amount for the growers each year. ( BOYS' PLAYHOUSE DESTROYED | Co.
