There was nothing to indicate whether Mra. Kirkbride wit- nessed and read the notes before her husband committed the double “mercy murder” but the contents revealed that the couple no doubt had talked over the deed fully be- fore thoy entered the pact. “Lite is not worth the struggle, AL" Kirkbride wrote, *“With some it is different, of course. The par- ent with a child to love, cherish, and support, the spouse with duties to maintain, the ones with dependents looking to them for help are differ- ent ones, “With both of us it is different. Absolutely no one dependent—every one better off when we are beyond the border. “And then, Al, most of us mortals place an importance upon things far beyond their value, In the end noth- ing matters much, for we slip out af this Jife and into another and the day of our death, like the day of our birth, will soon be shrouded with | forgetfulness, “And if it be remembered at all it will be with & smile to think that it could cause such a pang.” Pals For 17 Years As it to mitigate his act further, Kirkbride closed his note to bhis friend, the coroner: “For 17 years we have been pals (Kirkbride and his wife) through happiness, joy, grief and sorrow and T simply won't go beyond the grave without her and I simply cannot stand to see her suffer longer as I Lave experienced these cases am convinced she is subject to a long, long lingering illness, very similar to that she had in 1918." As Kirkbride neared the end of {the note it became involved. One thought followed another without re. gard to sentence structure, which | had been carefully thought out in the first notes. Apparently, the note to How was the last he penned before he took his revolver and put his wife beyond fear of insanity.
