“NEW BRITAIN "DAILY HERALD, TUESDAY, JANUARY 22, 192v Mm EWE : - . = UTTERICK PATTERNS ON SALE HERE! HARVARD MONEY Will Fornish Funds for Splitting Up Into Golleges Cambridge, Mass, Jan. 22 PM— Harvard University officlals made known today that Edward 8. Hark- \ess, New York financier, whose ynily has given millions to Yale and promised a gift of $11,892,000 to finance fully the plan 'of dividing Harvard collegs into small o tial groups. The announcement made through a letter to it A. Lawrence Lowell, in which ¥r. Harkness wrote: “According to the estimates which you submitted to me, Ha Uni- versity requires $11,392,000 earry out its plan for subdividing the ue. dergraduate. ‘body into smail resl- dential groups. This amount in- cludes $1,600,000 for endowment in connection with the plan. “I shall be giad to give to Har- vard University for the pose, this sum of $11 The plan for the the college, known plan® was first made public when President Lowell announced the gift of $3,000,000 from an anonymous donor, who, it was later learned, was Harkness. Today was the first announcement that moéney for the romplete re-organization entailed by the plan had already been promised, although President Lowell in his an- nual report to the overseers last week said that construction of the first two “houses” would begin shortly. Not Publie President Lowell has net made public the details of the reorgan- ization, but said in his report that each house would contain approxi- mately 250 undergraduates, which would mean the eventual utilisation of about ten houses. Harvard college will not be “superseded or rivalled” by the sub- division into houses, according to the president, becauss instruction will remain as befors, except fthat tutors will reside in the hoyses and maintain a closer contact With stu- dents than before. Studenfs in each house will be selected $o as to represent a cross-section $t the en- tire college, but the manner of se- lection has not yet bgen worked out. The plan is designed, pccording to President Lowell, to- sfimulate un- dergraduates in botly' scholarehip and athletics by rivalry between the “houses.” It is designed to strengthen. the tutorifl system, by which undergraduatfs do part of their college work ip individual or small group conferémces with tutors, instead of throu(h ctures and or- dinary classes. It is understood that three houses will be bullt along the Charles river near the present freshman desmi- tories, which will also be used as houses. The freshman class, not included in the “house” plan, will probably be movyd into the “yard” where the senior iclass s now group- ed in 11 dormitories. Each house will have its OT dining hall. President Lowell has emphasized that the sub-ditision is not an im- portation of the English college system at Oxiord and Cambridge universities, and recently assured the board of overseers that he con- templated at present no move to abolish the club system now ia force at the university. The plan was originally proposed in 1926 by 1 committee ‘of undergraduates ap- pointed by the student council. At home in New York city, hundreds admire her charming personality and she has fairly “set the style” on Droadway by the way she dresses her bajr. “The simple method I use il car- ms for my hair,” says Miss Shea, “has been of great help ta me in my motion picture work, whére one's hair must always look its best. It's just the thing for busy gifls, too, because it is so easy. Most of the girls I know in stage and picture work are taking it up as soon as they hear about it. All you do is put a little Danderine on your brush cvery time you use it. It makes your hair 80 easy to dress and holds it in place wonderfully, It's ideal fo. girls who are letting their hair grow. It keeps my hair and scalp 8o clean and comfortable. 1 don’t shampoo half so often, now. It gives my hair such a silky, soft, lustrous appear- ance that all my friends comment on it Danderine removes the oily film from each strand of hair, restores ‘ts natural color, gives it more lustre than brilliantine. It cleanses and in- vigorates the scalp: heips overcome dandruff. It is delightfully frag- ranced; isn't A!l(’ky or oily; doesn’t show. Waves, “set” with it, last longer.
