Last Night's Results New Britain 6, Waterbury 2. Bridgeport 7, Albany 4. Waterbury .. New Britain Albany Bridgeport Providence Fall River 565 495 400 .286 Games Tonight New Britain at Fall River. New Britain came into its own in the American Roller Hockey league last night when its roller hocke: quintet led by its two flashes, “Kid" Williams and “Cowboy” Thompeon, smothered the league leading Wa- terbury five under a 6 to 2 acore at the Stanley Arena. The game was the most important one of the season for the local crew because it meant either an advancement into first place in a tie with Waterbury or a drop in the sanding. As it was, Al- bany lost to Bridgeport and went & game lower into second place while New Britain’s win caused it to share the driver's seat with the Brass City contingent. There was no comparison in the play of the teams last night. Pete Welch, angered by a trick goal scored by Mulligan in the first pe- riod got solidly on his uppers and gave one of his best exhibitions of goal tending, fending off the best ef- forts of Davies, Mulligan and “Red” | Donnelly to get the ball past him. | His stops were not numerous but | those he did stop were spectacular | and hard-earned. New Britain's defense, directed again by the greatest defensive strategist in the game, “Barney” Doherty proved all but impregnable as the green-clad Shamrock offen- sives faded away with each sally down the floor. improvement with every game, play- ed like a champion aside of the great veteran “Barney,” and these two chained with Welch, made Water- bury's efforts for the most part, look sick. Willlams and Thompson dogged Bill Blount all night so that the Wa- | terbury goalie was sucked out of his cage time after time. Blount doesn’t like success for the opposing for- ds and his @oat got loose once | s0 that he charged Williams as the “Kid” came down t& score. Both went to the floor and Blount landed on his head inflicting & cut thereon. Gazzinga and “Red” Donnelly stag- ed a lively fist fight on the floor that .was broken up before any damage Was done. This happened near the end of the second period and at the beginning of the third and final frame, Donnelly was presented with a beautiful bouquet of roses from his New Britain admirers. starting the game, both teams be- | gan a terrific battle to get the first | goal. Willlams finally speared one past Blount after nine minutes of play. Thompson was the next of- fender and then Mulligan got & trick goal that Welch stopped only to have it bounce off his chest pro- tector, hit the inside of his shin pads and go in. Thompson ended the pe- riod with a shot for the home club making the count three to one for New Britain. New Britain got two in the sec- ond period, Williams and Thomp- son each taking a turn at slipping | one past Blount when he was away from his cage. The Waterbury net guardian looked foolish on both ef them as he was left standing on the floor 15 feet away from his cage. Waterbury got (wo in the period and New Britain got one making the count 6 to 3 hut three fouls took one from the Brass City tezn and the final count of the | game was 6 to 2. Busy Schedule New Rritain faces a busy schedule for the romainder of the week, To- night the team piays in Fall River while on Saturday, the quintet meets | Providence in the Rhode Island city. Despite the fact that his team was beaten 1 to 0 in an overtime session, Kaplan was the shining light | lof both teams and he received n generous hand of applause from the fans as he made his way out of the rink & member of the losing team, i The amateur game was Dy far the | best and most exciting seen at the Arena this season. The two teams were evenly matched except that the Nash quintet had a more spirited at- tack, Casperine and H. Gillette kept Kaplan working like & Trojan all through the game and gave him a total of 60 stops for his night | work. The defense of both teams was | E00d but the work of Hall and Kief- fer for the Nash quintet was excep- | tional because they broke up all of |the Dodge advances and gave their goal keeper, G. Gillette, & rather asy time of it. The same two tcams are anxious to try conclusions again in the near | tuture as both are satisfled that last night's game resulted in no decisive win for either team.
