MARK FOR LOCAL SPORTS New Britain Hailed as Best Supporting City In Entire State—All Branches Had Unprecedented Success— Basketball, Baseball, Roller Hockey and Fights All Flourished During 1928—Indoor Season Progress- ing Satisfactorily at Present, New Britain rightfully earned the reputation of being the best sports center in the state of Connecticut during the year of 1928, a survey of the sports situation shows. With the varlety of sports promotions conducted here and the success with which all of them met, the fans of this city ean well afford to sit back and view with satisfaction the work of the various teams in all branchea. State Champions . New Britain had another state championship team in basketball last year. The New Britain team, managed by Clarence Lanpher, waded through all the opposition fforded it in the state league and |came out the winner of the pen- nant. In competition with teams tother than those in the state ileague, the local quintet mowed {down all sorts of oppositisn and hung up a record that ecompares irnvorab)y with the quintet of 26 years ago. Roller Hockey In roller hockey during the sea- . son which closed last spring, the {New Britain team, though not a championship one, finished well up {in the lists and gave the fans the (feeling that the present season { would be productive of a team that would win the pennant this season. 180 far this year, the’ New Dritain jcrew has come through with a rally |that haa pulled the team from last place to the top of the list. Rotary Boys' League Once again the Rotary Boys' |league was conducted during the past season and proved highly suc- | cessful. It is hinted that the mu- jnicipal recreation board might take over the league next season. Record of Falcons For the sixth successive year the main baseball attraction on Sundays !in this city was furnished by the | Falcons. The Polish aggregation .banded together one of the strongest | semi-pro lineups in the state and were coached by Raymond Begley. The local club entered the Connect icut State-league but the circuit fail- led to interest the fans here and the | I"alcons dropped out. Some of the best attroctions in this state and Massachusetts were { brought here by the Falcons man- {agement and some real baseball classics were staged at St, Mary's ifield. The local club copped its | share of wins and, as a result, large | crowds were present every Sunday. At the end of the scason the Fal- cons entered in a city series with the Stanley Works, Burritts and the Rangers and succecded in capturing its first city champlonship. In the |Greater New Britain series with Kensington, the Paper town team proved too strong with “Coke"” Woodman in the box and the Fal- | cons wer~ forced to take three beat- ings in a row. In all, the Falcons had a very successful year, winning 16 games and losing 8. “Johnny” Klatka, who led the team in batting, was voted the most valuable player on the team and was | presented with a gold watch. Hizh School Activities With the exception of its feat in winning the Triangular football | championship, New Britain high school teams have had mediocre success since January 1, 1928, Th» basketball team divided with Hart- ford and New Haven, winning the | home games and losing the contests in the Capitel and Elm Cities. In baseball New Britain lost both games ;but in the second game Pitcher Joe | | | | | hits. New Britain and New Haven ticd in football, but the Hardware City eleven scored an unexpected victory over Hartford in football. One of the features of the year were two unexpected victories over New Haven Hillhouse high with which the rivalry is second only to that between New Britain and Hart- ford. In basketball the team over- came a big first half advantage and won by a lone basket. In baseball the Hillhouse team came to this city with a record of nine victories, but it lost its first game to New | Britain which had not won & game, In football last fall New Haven was favored to win but it was lucky to tie New Britain. The final whistle kept New DBritain from acoring when it was within a foot of a touchdown. Hartford and New Haven each i gcored more points than New Brite ain in the Triangular track meet, A new plan was decided upon last year in awarding the Willlam F, Burns Memorjal. From now on the award wil be made semi-annually, Fred A. Zehrer was the first mid- vear graduate to win the trophy, He took the honor without opposi- tion. Arnold Reckert was awarded the honor in June over Fred W, Saunders in a very close race. Dusty Basketball Corbin Screw men’'s basketball team proved to he the best tecam in the Industrial League and it won the championship of 1927-28 by a wide margin. On only a few occa- sions did other teams in the leaguse threaten but the Screw Shop men, because of their superior pass work, | beat all opposition and copped the flag. In the Girls’ Industrial league, Coach Clarence Coon brought a team which had finished in last place the year hefore to the chame pionship. 1t was the P. & F. Cor- bin girls’ team. Paul LaHar, captain and forward on the Fafnir Bearing team won the individual scoring championship and as a prize he was given a silver statuette. Mary Motyka, forward on the P. & I Corbin team, won the champlonship in that leaguc. This year a new plan was tried by the industrial council of the Y. M. C. A. which has been sponsoring the industrial leagues for the past five years, A season ticket innovation came into vogue and the result waw that the ticket holders make up & rccord crowd which watches the games. _ The league's record in at- tendan® has been broken several times so far this season. Tast year's champions, Corbin Screw men and P. & K. Corbin girls are again in front in the league standing and both are playing as | good if not better basketball than last year. Boys' Club Sports The Boys' c!"' had a successiul (Continued on Following Page) 1x‘om allowed Hartford only two Sloman. Zakzewski played his usual position at center. Jimmy Zakzewski was high scorer of the night. He made the most of his points in the sccond half.
