GOUNGIL DEFEATS MAYOR'S VETO ON H, S, BOND ISSUE (Continued from First Page.) absent, as were Councilmen W. D. | Boyle, W. W. Green, L. Samorajczyk | and Lucian Macora, all democrats. | Mayor's Veto i The veto message read by the | mayor, stated:— | “I question the advisability of | crecting a new building to join onc built some 30 years ago, and another which has been standing 14 years. “The school committee has adv ed that of the 27 rooms planned, they contemplated using 14 rooms | for junior high school purposes. The Roosevelt school was planned and built for a junior high school, en- tailing higher building costs, and it is my feeling that it should be so used. But the school committee does not agree. “The state survey recommends use of the Roosevelt school for a junior high school. The local survey com- mittee has cxpressed a feeling that this building should have been at the northwestern section of the city. “The report placed in my hands shows that the Central Junior high school is not overcrowded, and 1 be- lieve that, with the use of the Roose- | velt building, the junior high school problem is solved for many years to | come, | “With reference to the Senior high school: There 13 serious objections to the outlay of money to build an auditorium Wwith a seating capacity of 2,000 and a feeling that the ques- | tion should be gone into thoroughly. “It Is true that there is pressing need for repairs to the present high school plant. The board of finance and the common council provided $22,817 for repairs, when asked, on July 10th, anda tax of one-fifth of a mill now stands against next year's | assessment as a result. “This was in addition to the $40,- 000 allowed for repairs in the bud- get, making a total of $62,817 whicn the school committee has received for repair work. Then again, on July 10, an additional $48,987.84 was| given the school committee to com. plete repair of the Israel Putnam school, and $50,000 in bonds h been set aside for that purpose. This means that in addition to what was \allowed In the budget, the schou committee has reccived an addition- | al $71,804.84 since the opening of | ithe current fiscal year. It is un-| necessary for me to remind you that the school board now spends almost | 50 per cent of our revenue from | taxes. | “I am a tirm believer in education | T am opposed to part-time schedules | for pupils, regardiess of grades. It 'is my feeling that portable schools ishould be replaced at once and that | ‘any school housing classes in such | buildings should have an addition to | eliminate them, Our elementary | school problem is pressing. “Before you vote on this measure remember that the proposed bond 1s- sue did not have the unanimous backing of the board of finance. “I sincerely trust you will agree | with me that an addition to the | Senior high school with 27 class- ‘rooms and an auditorium of 2,000 capacity would be a grave mistake.” | Sewer Bonds Approved A roll call vote showed the coun- | cil to be unanimously in favor of re- | opening of sewer construction work as advocated by Mayor Paonessa, and approval was given a bond issue | of $150,000 for this purpose. It is not contemplated that bonds | ishall be issued at this time, but a Joan of $25,000 will be negotiated and work started with these funds. Several of the smaller jobs will be undertaken at once after which the Barnesdale loop of the trunk line will be built. On recommendation of Alderman David L. Nair, it was voted to re- turn to property owners on Arch strect and on Stanley street, money which they paid to the collector in the form of benefits for proposed street widening. It was also voted to strike from the books lines which have stood against other properties along these streets. Corporation Council John H. Kirk- ham reported to the council that he | has agreed to a settlement of the | suit brought by Hannah Larson for personfll injuries in a sidewalk fall, | g compromised the $25,000 suit | for $550. Councilman John A. Lar- | son moved that the a | sanctioned, In doing so, Mr. L. remarked that Hannah Larson his sister although, by coincidence, has a sister by that name, READ AERALD CLASSIFIED ADS FOR BEST RESULTS | GIFT OFHEALTH & HAPPINESS TIM'S CAP100% WORSTED | noble, ‘John J. As a result of your fearless action T learn that Truslow received only superficial burns to his hands and a slight lameness from his drop to ground. “In taking the action you when you went to Truslow's a tance, you knowingly risked injury frem electrical shock and you took a further risk that your safety belt would not hold the weight of both of your bodies when you jumped from the plank. “I wish, therefore, to take this| opportunity both personally and as representing thois company to ex- press sincere appreciation of a most unselfish and deed. At a time when a companion was at the point of death you faced two obvious dangers and twice knowingly risked your own life. We recognize not only your contempt for your own safety but especially are impressed with the quick thinking and presence of mind which made your act effective and successful. It was truly an heroic deed, beyond the worth of money, and merits the applause of all your fellow men. “It is with this thought in view that the company takes pleasure in presenting you a watch properly in- scribed and a purse of gold. We rec- ognize that neither of these things do in any measure make recompense for your act but they may serve to show appreciation of its merit. “Very sincerely yours, “President.” Poland Would Make Dueling a Crime Warsaw, Poland, Dec. ¢ (#—The Polish socialist party has introduced a bill in parilament by which mur- der charges would be preferred in the event of a fatality in duels and would make participation in a duel a crime.
