[ | NEW BRITAIN HERALD [reren NEW BRITAIN CONNECTICUT, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1928. 3000 VISTORS AT HAMMONASSET Season of 1828 Greatest in His- fory of State Park Hartford, Nov. 13.—The state park and forest commission has tabulated attendance figures for Hammonassett Beach state park in Madison, during the past season Wwhich marked the increasing use ef this popular park. There were re- ' corded 395,000 visitors from January 1 to September 30 of which 12,393 were campers and 117,600 were bathers, the remainder being largely picknickers. Nearly 70,000 automo- biles passed over the self-registering counter used to recofd attendance during the busy season. The largest attendance was on August 6 when approximately 25500 persons pic- | nicked, camped or enjoyed a dip at some point along the two miles of state-owned beach. The greatest holi. day attendance was on Fourth of July when it reached 18,115. On Memeorial day it amounted to 7,500 and on Labor day 5,000. 2,700 Camping Parties Overnight camping use far sur- passed that of previous years. 2,700 parties spent a total of 46,107 days or about 125 years' time in camp on the park. 8eventy per cent were from Connecticut. Twenty-six other atates and Canada were represented. Distant states included California, Texas, Colorado, Oklaho; and Ilorida. By far the largest mber of out-of-state campers came from Massachusetts; New York was a bad second; Pennaylvania and New Jer- sey tied for third place, Rhode Is- land sent only 27 parties. Most of the out-of-state camping parties remain- ¢d only a night or two. Connecticut residents usually stayed longer. Camping is ®0 rapidly increasing | that additional camp sites are being | developed with lights, sanitary facili- tics and running water. They are marked off into lots of suitable size, the exclusive use of which, for short or long terms, is given for a moder- | afe rental. Applications for 1929 for long term permits will be received at tie commission's office in Hartford after January 1, preference being . Given to Connecticut residents. Popular With Local Residents The bathing pavilions will accom- modate 3,000 at one time and were | often used to capacity. Residences of bathers are shown by the post | ofiics address of those who check \aluables, over 90 per cent of them being from Connecticut. The leading vities were in the order named: Hartford, New Haven, New Britain, Middletown, Meriden and Water- hury. The bulk of visitors came from the center of the state, 97% from Hartford, New Haven and Middlesex counties, 2 per cent from Litchfield and Fairfield counties and less than 1 per cent from New London, Tol- lund and Windham counties. The rosidents of the extreme eastern and western counties evidently find the journey over the crowded roads of | mid-summer too long to enable them to make use of this park for bath- ing. Bathers from outside the state comes largely from Massachusetts. One person evidenly crossed part \ of the Pacific ocean and all of the | United States to batlie at a Connec- | lecticut state park. as a Hawailan | checked his valuables while enjoy- ing a swim in Long Island sound, presumably not finding the beach dungerous, as the life guards gave ous assistance to only 37 persons. | Tesides its life guard service the commission maintains a first aid hureau and a matron scrvice for el- derly persons and women with ba- bies. These services aided approxi- | mately 3.900 people during the sea- son. Despite the large use of the find it | park, park police did not Decessary to make a single arrest. The commission has charge of only one other shore park on Lung Island sound, that being on Sher- wood Island at Westport in Fairfield county, Owing to its small area it has never been developed and is lit- tle used. CAPTAIN AND SEVENGO DOWN ON MOTORBOAT ¢ Try to Put to Sea to Retrieve Fish- | ing Boat—Swamped in Heavy Waves Norfolk, Va., Nov. 13 (—A ven- ture to sea in a motorboat with high northeast winds blowing in an ef- fort to retrieve a small fishing schooner yesterday cost the lives of |Captain Lee Hartman, veteran deep sea fisherman, and the seven mem- | | bers of the crew of the motor craft off Hog Island bar, in Accomac county. A heavy sea swamped and sank the motorboat. drowned were: Engineer Leroy Taylor, John Watson, Alonzo Meed, Robert Badger and Edward Hunter. All were resident of Accomac and Northampton counties. Captain Hartman and his crew set out early this morning to fish six their traps, they found the seas too (rough for them. While returning ithey lost a small scow they had in tow. Despite advice to the contrary {mand went out again in search of the fishing scow and on recrossing {Hog 1Island bar, his boat | swamped. Coast Guard Rescues | Va., Nov, 13 (UP)—The crew of six |of the Gloucester, Mass., fishing |schooner “Ruth Mildred.” which was grounded on a reef a mile and a half off shore here late last night, was rescued early today by coast guards after a strenuous fight against heavy | seas. False Capc coast guard stations went to the aid of e schooner at 11 p. m. last night when the crew sent up distress signal:, after |g-ounding the vessel on a reef when it was leaking badly. High seas, still running from the storm which swe . the western At- lantic Sunday, were pounding at the schooner this morning and it was feared it might be wrecked.
