QUEEN WEARING FANOUS DUANOND Gullinan Stone Believed fo Be Glt Rl London, Nov. 6.—(®—The atate opening of parliament today by King George with Queen Mary by his side wearing the Cullinan diamond, the largest in the world and estimated to be worth up to $25,000,000, has re- vived the speculation over what be- came of the “other half” of the great stone, ‘When the Cullinan diamond was dug from the earth at the Premier mines at Cullinan, South Africa, in 1905 it was found that one side was 80 flat and smooth that it was con- sidered to be only part of a much bigger diamond. The enormous half brother, howéver, has never been found, although scientists, diamond miners, financiers, geologists and thieves have been searching for it for 23 years. Its whereabouts and even its existence is one of the! world's mysteries. Many Tales South Africa abounds with strange stories of the missing half of the Cul- linan diamond. One version is that it was found by a pative worker in the diamond mines who feared to dis- pose of it because of the strict law governing the illicit selling of stones A notorious criminal once almost had his hands on it, but he attempted to trick the native who was prepared to sell it to him and the native fled with the diamond. Another story has it that the dia- mond is still in the possession of native tribesmen in the Zoupansberg district. The British Royal family, however, scem to be eatisfied with the big sparklers they got from what may be only half of the Cullinan diamond. The stone which was found in 1905 originally weighed 3,025 3-4 carats. It was purchased by the Transvaal government and presented to King Edward, It was taken to Amsterdam and divided into mine large stones and several smaller ones. The two largest ones are 516 1-2 carats and 309 3-16 carats, making them the largest diamonds in existence. SAYS IS EASY TO HANDLE MERE MEN Woman Employment Agency| Manager Tells How New York, Nov. 6.—(UP)—It's easy for women in business to handle | men, says Miss Carmen D. Beehler, who In her career as employment manager for large corporations, has dealt with every type from “smooth" collegian to'the touch tramp sailor, Miss Beehler is caled upon fre- quently to hire large groups of husky workmen of the type found around freight docks. “There have been few occasions’ when I have not been able to keep a large body of men—a herd, I call them sometimes—from becoming un- ruly,” she told the United Press in an interview. Miss Beehler is em- ployed by Bpencer-Kellogg, Inc., of New Jersey. “One reason—and I'm quite frank in admitting it—is because ] am a woman. Men have heen trained for centuries to do what women tell them and for this reason my troublcs with them have been trivial. “When I tell a man he’s been dis- charged or that he's not fit for the work, that's all there is to it. He leaves without a word. But lct a | wait plenty, il imagine lots of poker-playing hus- bands might have something to say | the other 12, about that. “If I ask a man, how many years' experience he has had—he will not say five if it truthfully is three. And it he is tempted to be untruthful, he just naturally stutters and gives himself away. “But let a man ask him that ques- tion and he'd probably tack on five years and accompany the answer with a cherubic smile.” Recently, Miss Beehler prevented | what might have developed into a catastrophe. She had advertised for 40 men to unload a freighter on the New Jersey side of the river at 40 cents an hour. The advertisement arnounced Miss Beehler would in- terview applicants at a river pier.
