Bept. 14.—One of | the strangest experiments in the higtory of medical science's long fight against disease—an experi- ment to which H. H. Timken, i ‘wealthy manufacturer of Canton, O., | has given $1,000,000—is soon to be undertaken here. It is.the “Timken tank,” a huge | alr tight steel ball fitted out like a | hospital, in which patients suffering I from diabetes and other mlladies‘ will live under 40 pounds of air premsure, forced into the tank by powerful air compressors. Sealed thepein, but continuously supplied | with fresh air pumped to them, | they will live as in any other hos- pital. It is claimed the compress- o4 air aids in restoring healith, Amid the noisy clatter of riveting machinea, steel workers have been | building the big hollow ball for | months. It is now practically com- | plete and will be ready for occu- | pancy about Oct. 1. Designed to | hold 30 pounds air pressure, it has | heen tested to 60 pounds and found leakproof, If you ecan imagine what life | would be like inside a balloon tire, | properly inflated, you can under- stand what living in this tank will be like. Double doors, like the | ‘watertight doors on a battleship or | submarine; a broken window glass | would mean a blowout, much like | that of an auto tire, It was as a testimonal to his faits | in the compreased air treatment of dfabetes that Timken gave $1,000,- | 000" for the erection of the tank | and & three-story brick hospital | buflding that adjoins it. Timken | saeks no profit thereon, but hopes | that the enterprise will be self- | sustaining. The millionaire was inspired to ~ make the gift by the claims of Dr. | 0. J. Cunningham that he has been | successful in treating such cases | with smaller compressed air equip- | ment in Kansas City. Dr. Cunning- | ham will be in charge of the tank | hoapital here. Some medical au- | thorities frankly are skeptical | about the queer looking hospital and are anxious for Cunningham to present proof and data concerning patients he has treated to recog- | nized medical agencles, | The compressed air, or oxygen, | treatment of diabetes, arthritis and | kindred diseases caused by what is known as the anarobic germ, is not new, but has never before been at- i tempted on such proportions. | In the three-story brick hospital | building which adjoins the steel tank, patients will receive prelim- | inary treatment. From there tley | will pass through steel tubes about | the sise of Puliman cars, where the | normal air pressure will be increas- | ed gradually to 30 pounds. Then | they will pass through the air-tight | doors into the big hollow ball. Inside the big steel ball are five flogrs, with an elevator In the cen- ter.
