I8 ‘credited recipe for DGEAN FLIGHTS HURT SHIP LINES Prove Expensive Thing for Com- pazies London, Aug. 31 (UP)—Bearching for lost transatlantic fiyers has be- come an important item in the ex- pense of operating ocean liners. Even when a flight is successful, ships along the route taken by the aviators are obliged to provide an extra watch and to communicate the position of any 'planc sighted This is cheerfully done, of course, and ships are diverted from their course just as cheerfully when 1he‘ word is received that a 'plane has been lost. But the expense to the shipping companies is far greater' than the layman would imagine. It a liner spends one day seeking a lost airplane, the shipping com- pany must bear at least the fol- lowing loss: one day's extra pay! for the crew; one day's extra food | for passengers; fuel for one extra \day lost in port before the return | i Liquor Sales to Be day; one day lost in port before the return salling. Then, too, pal-l sengers may miss connections in! port or suffer business losses; the officer and crew are forced to work under nervous tension during the search and in attempting to re- gain lost time after the ship's course is resumed. 1 Officials of shipping companies do not complain of this extra ex- pense. Many ships which leave their courses too late to be of serv. ice are not even mentioned when the newspapers tell their thrilling story of what the aviators thought about while waiting to be saved. “The actual cost of making a rescue at sea can hardly be esti- mated,” a spokesman for the United States Lines in Lordon told the United Press. “If a stranded air- plane sends out an SOS, all the ships within reasonable distance answer the call at full steam. But the ‘plane may drift from 50 to 100 miles before it is sighted. The first ship on the scene will advise the others if their help is not needed “Suppose that the Leviathan, with 1.000 passengers and 8§00 crew, loses a day in seeking oOr rescuing a transatlantic 'plane. A conserva- tive estimate, without counting a| voyage, places the loss at $14.000." | Stopped Election Day Managua, Nic. The ruling will be enforced by the national military police. The government has a monoply of the “Aguardiente” or' native liquor supply and in previous times this was used freely in buying votes. The decree provides that all gov- ernment distilleries and liquor ware- houses are to be padlocked Sept. 1 and the keys deposited at the mili- tary police headquarters. Possession of Aguardiente is for- bidden between Sept. 17 and Nov 10 and purchase or sale of other distilled liquors is barred on each of the five regisration days and election day and for 24 hours pre- ceding and following each of these periods The qecree also forbids the set- ting off of firecrackers on the regis- tration and voting days Hostilities Again Are Reported Near in China Shanghai, Aug. 31 (P—Reports trom reliable sources in Canton say the breach between Chiang Kal- Shek, representing the Nanking na- tionalists, and the Kwangsi clique controlling the Canton government, has reached the hostility stage. Fighting is reported to have broken out between troops of the two factions in the southern part of Kiangsi province.
