(U.P.)—Ex- periments with rats, conducted at Walter Regd army hospital here, in- | dicate that solariums to cure chil- dren of rickets can be operated | even in cities where fog and cloud | shut out the direct rays of the sun |a large part of the year. | Diffused light, or “skyshine” ap- | parently contains enovweh ultra- violet rays to affect human tissues, | Capt. William M. Fleming has de- |cided from his experiments. He placed two groups of rats, | fed on a diet calculated to produce | rickets, in glass cages on the north {side of a hospital buildirg, entirely out of the sun. One cage was cov- | |ered with ordinary glass, which | | prevents, passage of ultra-violet rays, and the other was a brand of glass which admits the rays. | At the end of a month the raty {in the ordinary glass cage were |badly afflicted with rickets. The others were almost normal. The discovery is believed valu- able because such solariums can | be maintained in many cities where there is relatively little sunlight | during many months of the year. The scientists described the ac- |tion of the ultra-violet rays by the | hypothesis that they produce a |mysterious “Vitamin-D" which |counteracts the lack of sunlight |which produces rickets. Rickets | usually results in misshappen bones {in children. Pure quartz is the |best “glass” to use in separating |and admitting the rays, but it is very expensive, so the violet ray |glass nas been perfected. The | chemical effcets of the sun's rays are a subject of much puzzlement among scientists.
