DIXON AND MATHER 1 NEAR CRASH IN AIR 1 Collisions Narrowly Avoided in Fog Over Long Island Sound (Special to the Herald) Groton, July 14 — Only by a superb exhibition of skill on the part of Lieut. Carl M New Britain and the quick think- ing of Lieut. Osmond M. Mathe: of Hartford was a head-on between two airplanes of the Division air service yesterday Dixon, who had started out in un- favorable weather to fly to Block Island, was supposed to return to the camp here in time for break When he did not return Muth- er left the field to find him. Flying low through the fog Mather sud- denly sighted Dixon's plane directly Dixon of averted in front of him and only about 100 | feet distant.
