ENGLISH SCHOOLS . SHOWING DECLINE Believed Due to Decreased Birth Rate Lendon, May 18 (UP)—The num- Tier of children attending the public lenentary schools of England and Wales continues to decrease, stati tics issued by the board of cduca- tion show. At the same time grant-aided sec- ondary schools, which might be called junior high schools or a step between grade school and high ichool in America, have made gains in their enrollments and now exceed the pre-war figure. These gains, Tiowever, still leave a “deficit” of “pproximately 250,000 on.the rolls of the schools, compared with the Jumber attending the institutions in 1914, Official figures on the attendance at public elementary schools follow: January 31, 19-4, 6.035.649; March 1, 1921, 5,854,068; March 31, 1927 7.020. The grant-aided secon- dary schools showed the following enrollment: January 31, 1014 87.207; Octoher 1, 1921, 362,025; October 1, 1926, 376,82 The public clemen schools €how a loss of 438,629 hefween 1914 and 1927, ubtracting the second- ary school gain of 189,622, the net loss remains 249,007 Teachers Decrease Foard of education fizures slion that there was a total of 163,936 teachers employed in 1914, not cInding teachers in practical instruc- tion cenfers. The latest available figure, that for 10925.2 is 1 showing a decrease of 1,3 noted Fowever, that the percentage of “ceriified” teachers has increased while the “supplementary™ or part- tima teachers not helding certifi between 1824 and 1927, by 185 per cent Th: declining birth rate zince the war s considered chiefly responsihle for the slump in school attendance The birth rate, 241 per 1.000 popu 1aton in 1213, pred to 17.8 in 1978, and the ’Ynm provisional esimate for 1927 is 16 7 The “piblic” school= in England ae exclusive institutione which maxy ts compared fo the preparatory ©hools of America. That. much has heen determined by Dr. R. W. Woods, professor of yhysics at the Johns Hopkins uni versity, and his collaborator, Alfred J.. Loomis of Tuxedo, N. Y.. in a series of ploneering experiments with sound waves of from 200,000 0 500,000 vibrations a second which are generated in an oilbath by a quartz oscillator operated at voltages in the vicinity of 50,000, Just how valuable these little known super-sonic vibrations may prove to be in physical, chemical und Dbiological ~ cxperiments and practice remains largely a matter of speculation at this stage of the in- vestigation, but several important | practical applications alrcady have been indicated. Red blood corpuscles in a physio- logical salt solution arc rapidly de- stroyed, Dr. Wood relates, the tur- bid liquid becoming as clear as a solution of red aniline dve, suggest- ing. because of the absence of heat {and chemical action, a new method | which may be of great value to the hiological chemist in making blood analyses. The bureau of chemistry and soils of the Department of Agriculture is preparing to utilize the sound waves in the analysis of soils, which often is made difficult by the sticking qualitics of colloidal substances clinging to the grains, Such colloids were removed from the grains of a “very difficult” sample sent to Dr. Wood with a few minutes’ applica- tion of the vibrations. By the usual methods. the process of shaking vio- lently and whirling must be repeat- ed 20 or 50 times, a tedious under- taking requiriug hours to disperse the colloids. Oil and water are shaken into a more or less stable emulsion when subjected to the waves, and a simi- lar misture of mercury and water can be obtained. Chemical reactions are lerated and crystaliztion be- gun, effects which are being investi- gated by Dr. W. T. Richards of Princeton. Small particles of matter, suspended in water, are driven to- gether, but small living unicellular organisms are torn apart. Bacteria, heing smaller, escape the destructive action of the waves, but small fish or frogs exposed to them in water are killed. A liquid such as henzol is quickly atomized. Heayy oil on a vibrating tube is thrown lout in jets of spray resembling smoke and a dense cloud gathers which, if lighted, produces an ef- fect like the sparks of Japanese fire- | works. The watea can along a glass thresd 02 i diameter and a meter or more in length,* Dr. Wood asserts, “and the end of the thread, if squcesd! burns a groove in the skin " The heat, he explains, oped by virbation enly at the eon tact point, and unless sq the ibrating glass thread can be held comfortably enongh with the fingers Holes can he burned through [ rhips of wood or drilled through a zlass plate with a fapering glass rod, 0A milmeters in at the be transmitted milimeters devel- queezed diameter hp “If the fop of the rod is fused to a bead with a flame,” he says, ‘it remamg moltan after the removal of the flame and increases in size as the rod below it melts, until finally 1t &naps off. The sound waves are able to melt the zlass since they are Moscor, —(UP)—The I once housed the famons Russian bass singer, M.
