* ASUUITHS LIF SLOWLY FALING No Hope Left for Former * British Premior Sutton Courtenay, England,. Feb, 14.—(F—Death was slowly drawing the curtain today on another great figure of the World war, the Earl of Oxford and Asquith who, as Herbert H. Asquith, served his country as prime minister from 1908 to 1916. All hope for Earl Oxford's recove #ry was abandoned by his physician early this morning and it was said the end was only a question of how Jong the enfeebled heart of the 75 year old statesman could hold out. 8oon after the Earl closed his po- Jitical career by resigning as leader . of the Liberal party on October 19, 1926, advancing age began to make §nroads on his once robust health, Yast week he took to his bed, pul- monary complications developed and early yesterday afternoon he lost kconsclousness. When ~the physician left the statesman’s home at 2 a. m. today he said that his patient was #till unconsclous, A little family group continued to watch at the Earl's bedside this morning. It included Lady Oxford, (Margot Asquith) who had kept a peaseless vigil for almost 60 hours, Anthony Asquith, a son and Princess Bebenco, & daughter. In the mullion windowed room in the red brick house which borders the main roadway the aged states- man battled for life, while his little Berkshire village slowly awaited his passing. From time to time one of the few hundred residents of Sutton Courte- nay would appear at the house to ask for the latest word of Earl Ox- ford’'s condition. One of the most deeply affected at the statesman'’s passing was the but- ler who had been in his service for many years. “He was the best master that ever . stepped on earth,” he said. “I can- not bear to see him lying there so helpless. It is a great tragedy, but, thank God, he is not suffering, he looked very peaceful and beautiful when I was in the room just now.” The sorrow felt in Sutton Courte- may was typical of the British nation and itg deep sympathy at the ebbing ©of the life of the man who was a part of the country's life for the past half century. At 4 a. m. it was announced that the patient was still slowly losing strength. His family remained at the * bedside.
