* iazz it up at the ‘WESI.EYAN CLUBS PRESENT MUSICALE Program 1t lloml School Warmly Received The motor coach bringing the singers and musicians of the Wes- leyan musical clubs to the State Normal school auditorium last night broke down, but a little thing like that could not permanently halt the troupe from arriving at their destination. What if they got there some 15 minutes late? The music was as good as if nothing had hap- pened, The auditorium was well filled with glee club enthusiasts, including a sprinkling of Wesleyan alumni. who were also strongly represented, there being a high pressure interest in the abilities of the Wesleyan mu- sicians, who landed on top in an in- ter-college competition last year. The concensus was that the Wesley- ans were 800d and well worth hear- ing. Incidentally, the Wesleyans proved the concensus to be true, The combined musical forces on tour inciuded the glee club, which has been coached to its present state of perfection by Edward F. Laubin, widely known director of choral bodies; an eight-piece orchestra which, though it comprises the regu- Jation dance band instrumentation did not contribute jazz to the pro- gram; an instrumental trio col posed of a flute, violin and piano, nale quarfet known as the Jibers; and a piano soloist. The glee club was at the apex of its efficiency in Grieg's “Land- Sighting,” the trio was most delight- ful in the “Shadow March” of Pro- theroe; while the pianist, M. D. Cas- ner, handled a Rachmaninoff pre- lude (not the hackneyed C. sharp minor) in sterling style. Another fetching number by the glee club was Handel's “Where'er You Walk,” - while the Kreutzer, “It is the Lord's Own Day” showed a fine balance of tone and sonority. The Serenaders, an eight-piece or- ';' chestra "which included three saxo- ; phones, trumpet and banjo, did not concert, though they might have done so during the period of dancing that followed. They played their selections in cir- | + cumspect manner and attained in- stant popularity. The Jibers male quartet easily edged their way into a warm-hearted 1eception. Indeed, they had to pro- vide many an encore, mixing humor and harmony with astonishing aban- don, When they sang the “Alma Mater” an {invitation was extended to all Wesleyan alumni {n the aud- | Sagc January Clearance Sale of 0dd assortments, discontinued patterns, rem- nants, etc. These drastic reductions insure a quick clearance before inventory.
