DOZENS ARE SHOT IN MEXICO RIOTS Many Catholics Die in Defense| o Religion Mexico City, Sept. 20 (A—Dis- patches today told of actions tnvolv- ing Mexican federal troops in wide- ly separated regions of the republic and for as widely varied reasons. In the state of Jalisco, on the west coast, troops fought two engage- ments with rebels described as “'Catholic fanatics,” this term has re- Deatedly appeared in military com- muniques since the outbreak of the struggle over the government's re- ligious regulations. Catholic leaders however, have consistently stated that thelr struggle was a peaceful one and that their followers were not authorized to use force. Thirty-four rebels were killed In the two combats, the first one at Los Mezquites and the second at Portez- uelo. In the Los Mezquites rebels, headed ‘a Catholie pri Father Sedano,” resisted the troops from entrenchments for four hours before fleeing, with the loss of 14 killed.
