S, DAKOTA BEING PULLED INTO LINE Republicans There Are Working Tor Coolidge Rapid City, 8. D., July 26 (UP)— In a series of conferences since the arrival of President Coolidge here, republican leaders of this doubtful state have reached a tacit agree- ment to carry South Dakota for Mr. Coolidge next year if possible. Senator Peter J. Norbeck, republi- can, South Dakota, and “big chief” of the state organization will an- nounce himself shortly for Mr. Coo- lidge. He will be followed by F. S. Meyers, who is to be republican or- ganization candidate for governor next year, and four of the leading newspapers of the state, Ordinarily this farming state has not been considered pro-Coolidge. Some republican newspapers criticiz- ed the president's veto of the Mc- Nary-Haugen bill, but since his ar-| rival there has been nothing but sympathetic comment on how his presence is booming the Black Hills as a vacation playground. The United Press s informed upon reliable authority that leaders are planning a series of announce- ments which may reflect their ap- preciation of Mr. Coolidge's choice for the summer white house. What voters will do about it, however, cannot be told until election day. Norbeck, Meyers and the four larg- st papers are considered the high- est political influences in the repub- lican organization, but talks with local people give no indication that Mr. Coolidge personally has captur- ed the state. At the recent Bellefourche round- up, Mr. Coolidge was given an en- thusiastic western welcome, and the announcer called on him four times for a speech. Townspeople were 5o certain that he would at least ex- press his appreciation of their re- ception that the local newspaper is- sued an extra edition quoting him prematurely as expressing gratitude. Mr. Coolidge's refusal to say a few words was the chief topic of con- versation on the streets there that night. Similar incidents have oc- is entitled to damages from the Faf- nir Bearing Co., by reason of in- Jury suffered when he fell while cleaning windows at the factory. He was employed by Edward McGrath, but the court ruled McGrath was not subject to the compensation law and that the manufacturing con- cern was the principal employer. CLAIMS INVENTION Washington Man’s Apparatus to Help Landing in Fogs Washington, July 26 (#—C. Fran- cis Jenkins, Washington inventor of several airplane devices, announced {today that he had originated an ap- | paratus to enable an aviator to | make a safe landing in fog or mist. It is in the nature of an alti- meter, Mr. Jenkins said, which “takes use of the known velocity of sound. The function of the instru- {ment is to measure the time which is taken for sound to travel to the |carth and back to the plane. It consists of a tiny motor which first of all actuates a sound-producing miechanism, through which the sound is sent to the earth. It also operates a wheel spinning tiny light bulbs just behind the ground glass calibrated dial of the altimeter on the instrument board of the plane. “As the echo of the sound reaches a microphone attached to the plane, lamps are lighted back of the dal. The frequency of the sounds and the resultant echoes caught by the microphone are transformed flashes of light, and these flashes, appearing at various points of the calibrated 'dial furnish the gulding marks which tell the aviator wheth- er he is five hundred, fifty or five feet above the ground.” DR, MEREDITH T0 BE HOOVER HELPER Will Serve on His National T0 AID AVIATORS! into | ANNUAL DISTRICT GROTTD GATHERING Field Day, Ceremonial, Bathing Beauties and Mardi Gras Obeh Grotto of Bridgeport, will be the host of 35 other Grottos in New Engiand inter-Grotto conven- |tion and field day, on August 19 lana 20, 1927.
