MANY VOLUNTEER 70 GIVE OF BLOOD Three Westerly Students Al- ready Aid Stricken Pal Westerly, R. I, June 9.—(P— Three Westerly High school athletes have already submitted to blood transfusion operations to save the life of Leo Dotolo, a fellow student, end six other young men, five of of them kLigh school ‘students, have been accepted by physicians for fur- ther transfusions if they are needed. Leo Dotolo was operated upon for appendfcitis May 5. Five nights lat- er, he dressed and left the hospital. He was later found in the outskirts of the hospital grounds. His exertion so soon after the operation brought a relapse, and his | condition became critical. His cousin, Frederick Dotolo, mem- ber of the school nine, heard that the doctors considered blood trans- fusion nocessary and volunteered. He was accepted. When more blood was needed Anthony Lionett, left tackle on the football team and Thomas Fiore, another football Player, were called upon in turn. Altogetker nearly a quart of new blood has been supplied to the sick youth, whose condition, while still considered critical by the physicians, is reported improving by the hos- pital authorities. VETERAN PHYSICIAN DIES, AGED 71 YRS, Dr. Calef Was Long Prominent in Middletown Middeltown, June 9(P—Dr. Jer»! miah Francis Calef, 71, for about 30 vears medical examiner for Middle- | town and from 1899 to 1901 surgeon general on the staft of Governor George E. Lounsbury, died at his home here here early yesterday fol- lowing a shock. A native of Middletown, Dr. Calef apent his entire life here except for a short interval of study in New York, and three years in which he practiced in Cromwell. He was graduated from Wesleyan in 1877 and from the Yale Medical school in 1580. Dr. Calif was at one time vice- president of the Society of Military Surgeons of the United States and had written several works on mili- tary surgery. During the World war he helped to organize the sixth regi- ment of the Connecticut state guard. He was secretary of the Middlesex county medical society and had been both town physician and health offi- cer. He was a Mason.
