’ » UNKNOWN VICTOR IN AUTO GLASSIC George Sonders, Indianapolis Winner, Novice on Track Indianapolis, Ind., May 31 (UP)— George Souders, heretofore unknown among motor car race drivers, to- day has a commanding lead for the 1927 championship by virtue of his victory in the Indianapolis 500-miles sweepstake yesterday. The winner of the race, which was made in an average speed of 97.54 miles per hour, is almost a mnovice on the track. He is only 24 years old and it was the first big-time race he had entered. Souders is a former student at Purdue university. When the cars came pounding into the pits at the close of yesterday’s race, a score of people rushed to Souders and want- «d to aid him from *is tiny Duesen- herg racer. “Let me alone. I'm tired,” he «aid. It was his only reaction to the fact that he had just won the premier motor event of the nation and had won approximately $30,000 in the capital prize and lap money. Second place went to Earl Devore in a Miller special and third to An- thony Gullotta in a Miller special. Three drivers were injured in the race. Jules Ellingboe received a crushed chest when his racer over- turned. The speeding cars of Frank Kohlert and Clift Bergere collided and Kohlert was dan‘erously in- jured. Norman Batten was burned when his motor car burst into flames. He drove the burning machine into the pits and then collapsed.
