Salt Lake City, Utah, May 27 (P Eight.one years ago 500 Mormons then er route from the western edge of civilization to a new location tor a colony of their own answered the call for volunteers in the war with Mexico. The memory of theif sacrifice and valor will be per- vetuated by a& huge monument carved out of 450 tons of solid granite and representing 23 years of endeavor. - The history chisled into a small mountain of stone, forming a base and background for a bronze statue’ of one of the warriors, is a record of bravery, courage and de- votion to country. This response to the nation’s call involved an in- fantry march of two thousand miles from Council Bluffs, Ia., by way of Santa Fe, N. M., to 8an Diego, Cal, through a wilderness :nhabited by savages and wild beasts, across des- erts where for lack of water there were no living animals and over mountains until then virtually un- traversed. Although in their westward movement the hardy soldiery clash- ed with the enemy garrison at Tucson and ‘drove them out with thelr own artillery,” according to war department records, the break- ing of a wagon route to the Pacific was “unmarked by a. single act of injustice.” Eight-one members of the volun- teer brigade who offered services to President Polk and were mustered into the army under the authority of Colonel Stephen W. Kearney at the Jowa post, *re-enlisted for six months additional service in the Mexican war. Seven participated in the discovery of gold in California, while an invalided detachment of 150 joined Brigham Young's original pioneer company in Salt Lake Valley NEW BRITAIN DAILY HERALD, FRIDAY, MAY 27, 1927, and helped found the commonwealth of Utah. The monument was designed by Giibert Riswold who spent more than four years on the carving. The basal design, including two reffec- tion pools on east and west sides, is the work of Frank C. Walker, architect. The Utah legislature apprdpriated $100,000, available when matched dollar for dollar hy private contri- bution, and the state' of Arizona | helped provide funds for financing | the monument. Great numbers of residents of California and Nevada contributed while offerings likewise were received from residents of nearly all states in the Union. President Coolidge, the war de- partment and the United States army will be officially represented at the unveiling ceremonies here on May 30. BUAT BUILDER T0 HAVE SPEEDY ONE Chris Smith Promises to Eclipse Miss America Algonac, Mich., May 27 (#—The maker of ten Gold Challenge Cup winners and of two captors of the Harmsworth trophy avers that the world's fastest speed boaf has not yet been built. Chris Smith vows, moreover, that he will build it in the Algonac shop, where he fashioned the Miss America, and where he has been making boats for all but ten of his 65 years. Powered with two Liberty 12 motors, his Miss America set the world competitive record of 70 miles an hour in 1921. He followed it ; with the Miss America II to win the i for the | power boat title in 1922 second successive year. Then a change in the Gold Cup rules halted, his plunge for speed by confining entrants to boats of runabout type with an average pace of some 46 miles an hour. Now the rules are revised again to permit entry of hydroplane craft like those Smith built so success- fully. He expects a chance to b the seven-year-old mark of the America in this summer’s competi- tion. When he was five Chris Smith began whittling models of boats, and to this day he carves the pat- terns for his craft, resorting rarely to blue prints. He began winning Gold Cup races in 1915, and even the change in the rules which stopped his develop- ment of hydroplane speed boats did not halt his conquering course, for he buiit winners in the restrict- ed class in 1922 and 1923, ‘When' Smith wants a hull for a new vessel he goes over to Wal- pole Island and picks out a tree for it, which is sawed and carefully seasoned. Three sons, Jay, Bernard and Owen, have grown into their fa- | ther's boat building profession, and any of them may generaly be found in a mechanic's seat at a Harmsworth or a Gold Cup race.
