Says the “Courant’ Away with the Wooden Shingle, “As far as the East is from the West,” isn't always so very far. Hartford and San Francisco have a comimon complaint. It ig the menace of the wooden shingle, much in evidence in connection with the recent fire at the baseball park in this city. The chief of the San Francisco Fire Depart- ment is earnestly trying to get the city council to extend over the whole city the provisions of the ordinance prohibiting the use of wooden shingles in certain sections of n Francisco. The San Francisco fire chief has reason to know what he is talking about, as he remembers his experience of a year ago, a conflagration being threatened when sparks from a fire, also at a baseball park, were carried by the wind more than a mile and started some fifty other fires. It re- quired almost the entire fire-fighting ap- paratus of the city to save the residential section. San Francisco certainly knows what a real fire is and Hartford fire insurance companies are not without knowledge also. We hope that the California fire chief, who the good old fighting name of Murphy, wins his battle. What he seeks is something that will have to come where. Hartford prohibits the use wooden shingles in' the business district, but with eighteen fires started by the fire at the baseball park, the city has had suf- ficient warning against the further use of the inflammable shingle. The time to act is now. RU-BER-OID - WEATHER PROOF PRODUCTS Says Rackliffe’s RU-BER-OID Shingles and Roofings - Have Been “Standing the Gaff” For 33 Years.
