BETTERING SERVICE Makes Several Recommendations in Its Annual Report Two reports, that of tha board of | fire commissioners and that of Fire | Chief Willlam J. Noble, were made | public at the meeting of the fire | board lest night. Each report calls| attentlon to the work accomplished | during the past year and the need | ‘or greater improvements within the voming year. Probably the greatest needs are | hose which were , outlined in the| ferald last evening; the recommen- dation of a new fife station in ‘the western section of the city; of a new | ixty-five foot service ladder; and of | additional funds to properiy man the | ‘iepartment. A brief resume of the chief's rec. ommendations follow: A car for as- | sistant chiefs and master mechanic | in carrying out their duties; a 65 toot service ladder to improve serv- ice in northern section of city and to relieve the No. 2 department ; a| lirge pump at No. 5 to replace 250 | zallon pump now in use; appolnt- | uent of 10 firemen for No. 3, 4, 5, 6 | ind 7; a new fire station in the western section of- the ‘city; and a vecommendation that in the near fu- ture the matter of collection of waste paper and rubbish be taken up. In xplaining the latter recommenda- | tion Chief Nobie said that the solu- tion of the problem would be for the | city to coliect and dispose of the | rubbish by building an ircinerator. | He said it would prevent dump fires | which are both a nuisance to the neighborhood and the department. | a new station, a new plece of ap- “At the present time plans are being made for the construction of | a new drill tower in the rear of No. {7 fire station which will enable the | track. officers of the department to drill the men . more thoroughly. This drilliig will make the men more proficient in their duty as firemen and will give them practical experi- ence in scaling’ walls, climbing lad- ders with the hose and taking down dummies. This training is neces- sary as men going into burning building must rely on the men ac- companying them. to do the right thing at the right time so that their lives will not be exposed to unnec- essary dangers. Fire Alarm System 1 “The fire alarm system was en-| larged by the laying of. 6500 fect of | cable in the Myrtle street subway. | Instead of this commission purchas-| ing'the cable as heretofors it was| jointly agreed between the police| and fire departments to purchase one cable containing twelve wires, | four to-be used by the fire depart- ment and six by the police depart- ment. This was done by the elec- tric department and during the| coming year' the laying of 7000 feet! more of cable along these same| plans will be done in the South, Main street subway. | “The fire alarm system has been | improved by the installation of sev- en new fire alarm boxes.
