R. to Have Ameri- canization Programme — Maple Hill Club Meets. 1 i | I One of the outstanding events of the k was th nnual est night of the Woman's club held Tuesd: evening at the First church chapel, when members and their guests v.ere entertained by the Colonial Male Quartet of Hartford. | The quartet cons s of Maurice ‘Wallin, first tenor; Raymond Grant, sccond tenor; Robert Mercer, bari- | tone, and Harry Coe Olmstead, bass; with Albert Stanley Usher, | accompanying. Their quaint Colo- nial costumes added a pleasing fea- ture to the occasion. The quartet sang four groups of songs. The first group consisted of | songs of a serious nature including | “Immortal Music” by Robyn, “Beau- teous Night,” by Offenbach and the | ever popular and stirring “John Peel” by Andrews. The encore, “Oh Miss Hannah,” given after this group, was particularly pleasing. The second group consisted of thres songs; the third group concerned three Negro spirituals and the fourth of three songs of varied character including *“Volga Doat Song,” “Ole King Cole,” and “The Maid in the Valley.”” The work of the quartet was espec ly good in the pianissimo effects produced in the last song menti d. The four &ingers were very gencrous with en- cores in response to the hearty &pplause of their audience. Mr. Wallen and Mr. Olmstead sang with much feeling, the well known “Solenne in Quest’ Ora" from Verdi's “For: del Desinto.” Two readings were given by Miss Rotha A. Staples who was at her best in the costume and mannerisn of a New England spinster At ti of the pre froshments were served by committee, with Mrs, and Mrs. Buel Bass the attractively de la c ¥ re the social Marcus White, te p ed m esiding table » Woman's elub of Maple ¥ noon strom on Rohbins C.
