\' adjournment a week from tomorrow . blace it two hours later with the CONGRESS NEARS. ADJOCRNMENT DAY Little Chance of Passing Much Added Legislation Washington, Feb. 24 (M—Facing and with the filibuster germ that practically killed Boulder Canyon dam legislation for the present ses- sion spreading to other controversial measures, congress entered today upon a program to clean up as many bills as it can be but with lit- tle prospect of passing much addi- tional major legislation. Although the Swing-Johnson bill to dam the Colorado river at Boulder Canyon was due to come up again today in the senate at 2 p. m. after its sponsors were blocked in their efforts to bring it to a vote by a three-senator filibuster during a thirty-four session, thers gppeared little prospect of action since re- publican leaders had planned to dis- alien property return measure. Once laid aside in the senate, the Lill will stand virtually no chance of & vote in eithér house at this ses- sion, since the house steering com- mittee bas decided that it will not be taken up in the house unless act- ed upon In the senate. Meanwhile under an agreement ched at another night session, the :nate had planned to devote its first two hours today to consideration of other subjects, including the Tyson cmergency officers’ retirement bill, while republican leaders hoped to obtain an‘agreement to take up the administration’s prohibition and cus- toms reorganization measure. Two hours have been set aside for con- sideration' of Muscle Shoals leglsla- tion tomorrow. The house, proceeding under a tentative program mapped out by its steering committee, gave right of way today to the naval appropma- tion bill conference report, includ- ing the controverted senate amend- ment providing $1,200,000 to begin work on three light cruisers, which the house already has rejected in modified form. After disposing of thls subject, f¢ plans to take up the $63,400,000 deficiency supply bill and the Hawley medicinal whiskey measure; then two bills authorizing approximately §30,000,000 for various naval activi- 50 Years Ago It Was Reported Some parties in town seem to be taking speclal delight in poisoning several valuable dogs in this city. This branch of enterprise has been in the past looked upon with pride and satisfaction as a great means of strength and power. The manufacturing industries of New Pritain have been acknowledged as foremost in rank and importance wherever its productions are known, throughout this broad land, and we are confident it will continue to hold this place in the future, and all who ave interested in its success will ever guard with zealous ecare name of our honored eity.
