WILL TO SERVE IS SPIRIT OF KIWANIS F. K. Kean Delivers Tnspiring Talk at Club Banquet Jesus was a sportsman, whose message was one of a square deal, He had nothing to do with modern | narrow ideals of theology, according | to Franklin H. Kean, international representative of Kiwanis clubs and for 20 years headmaster in the Uni- versity school at St. Louis Mo. Mr. Kean spoke last evening at the fourth annual banquet of the Ki- wanis club, at the Elks’ hall. He took as his theme Paul’s oration on love, and analyzed the interpreta- tion, applying his analysis to the spirit of Kiwanis. He sald the Council of Vienna predicted the World War almost to the date, 100 years previous. He pointed out that the wave of senti- ment as opposed to war resulted during the war in the birth of civic clubs, which he said was the great- est constructive force in America. “When St. Paul said Tove thy neighbor’ he did not mean some- thing saccarine or sentimental, he spoke of love as that of the high- est respect in whom he held other men and tolerance for their thoughts and views,” the speaker said. He said Kiwanis does not exist in its orators, adding: “The true serv- ice man is the man with not so much utterance but who is willing to hear with an effective ear. “It is a mistake to think that in- dustrial or commerclal success makes a Kiwanian. Often the superior man in the bank {s the cashier and not the president.” The speaker severely criticised men and women of blunt speech, who tell the truth to their friends without regard for the injury their feelings, as “almost a coward.” “A man of that type !s a man of magnificent bluff. He covers his own cowardice in a certain brus- queness,” he said. i “One of life's greatest trials is the self made man who makes him- self generally disliked. In time of adversity he cries ‘Look what has been done to me’; when he is pros- perous he says “Look what I have done." “Sinclalr Lewis in his ‘Babbitt’ found some evidences of danger. We sit around a table patting our- selves on the back and think we are the salt ‘of the earth. “A large part of the scandal in the world s because of that trait of destructiveness and meanness in all of us who like to pull down greatness to our own standards. “There is always a way to achieve .the ends of law and de- cency without being in the least incompatible with mercy and jus- tice. “You are not a clothier if you simply confine yourselt to selling clothes as long as there is naked- ness in the word. You are not a baker if you confine yourself to selling bread as long as someone is hungry.” A diamond watch fob with a Kiwanis emblem was presented to President J. M. Ward by Rev. Dr. A. A. Ahlquist on behalf of the club, Arthur Berg and Willlam R. Fenn were presented with Kiwanis buttons for not having missed a meeting in a year. Harry C. Bill- ings was presented with a pen- knife mounted with a Kiwanis em- blem in gold, for not having miss ed a meeting since the club organized. Gold émpacts with K wanis emblems were presented to the women guests. Stanton Ashley, Dwight Latham and Paul E. Lucas furnished en- tertainment. John gave .generously—not of money but of beef stew, which he threw at the spokesman's face. Blinded, the bandid was dragged from the cart by his companion, und both escaped in an automobile.
