Speaking ¢ of Sports The baseball world stands aghast today at the revelations of Judge Landls with respect to the game of ‘baseball played in 1919. Some of the fans don’t know whether to be shocked or whether to laugh it off. Whether there is anything true in the so-called scandal or whether the twg Idols of the baseball world, Cobb and Speaker, were guilty of any- thing more than just making a bet on a game, will probably never be settled definitely. i From the first accounts of t game which was played seven years ago, it would seem that Cobb and Speaker certainly weren't trying to win their money if they had it down. Detroit was supposed to win the game. Ty Cobb got one hit out of five times at bat. Speaker got th: out of five, two of them triples. Neither Wood or Leonard pitched in the game. ‘We suppose that 10 or 15 years from now, someone will bring forth proot that Babe Ruth was trying to throw the recent game in the world #eries when he got his three home runs. We are inclined to believe that Judge Landis used very poor judge- ment in making public the testimony | given at the various sittings in the| investigation. Leonard, who brings the charges, has refused to meet either Speaker or Cobb at a hearing and if he refuses to face these men, whem he accuses, then his charges should be thrown where they merit a final resting place, the waste bas- ket. FOOTBALL GAME BY * RADID AGROSS U.S. Alabama Battle | An unparallelled feat of radio broadcasting that will bring Califor- nia and the classic football game of the west to millions of radio listen- ers in the east will be an outstand- ing feature of the New Year's Day program to be transmitted to the larger part of the United States by the National Broadcasting company, it is announced today. WTIC, Hart- ford, is undecided as to whether or not it will broadcast the feature. Through a system of remote con- trol, mever before attempted on a transcontinental scale, the east will listen to a play-by-play description of the championship football {ame at Pasadena, California, between the Leland Stanford University team and the University of Alabama's eleven of New Year'’s Day. Thousands of radio listeners in the United States, in towns and villages covered with snow, will hear how the southwest-| ern section of the country where lroses bloom in winter, celebrates ‘0 make the broadcasting of this event possible by stations through- {out the east and on the Atlantic sea- : hoard, over 23,000 miles of wire will be utilized.
