WEARYING OF ALL SLURS AT YOUTH Dr. Gates of Boston Gomes to Defense of Young Folks Bridgeport, Nov. 4 (M—There has never been a generation of older people that has not believed the young people were “going to the dogs,” declared Dr. Herbert w. Gates, of Boston, general secretary of the Congregational Education so- clety, at its annual meeting here yesterday, letting it be known that Te is tiring of hearing things about the downfall of young people. Dr. Gates' declaration followed & quotation by him from a movel of Harriet Beecher Stowe, written in 1871, referring to “those days” when parents sit at the fest of their chil- dren in humility. Dr. Gates did not make it known, however, that the quotation was from a book written 50 years ago until after his hearers had gained the impression it was from some modern work. Prior to Dr. Gates, at the annual meeting of the Congregational Pub- lishing society, Dr. Sidney A, Wes- ton, of Boston, executive secretary, said that the work of the soclety is refreshing in the face of the exploi- | tation and comfnercialization of young people and their problems by an who have selfish gain as their oRly motives. He is sometimes “nau- seated” by the “stuft” written about young people, he stated. The two socicties voted to defer actlon on an amendment to their by~ laws, providing for increasing the board of dircctors from 24 to 36 members and further providing that | the personnel of directing board shall be identical for the eight Congregational home boards. A merger of the administration divis- jons ot the work is conteraplated, but each of the eight societies will pe continued as a separate legal cor- poration, The amendment was laid on the table until the biennial meetings to bo held next May in Omaha, Neb., in conjunction with' the national coun- cil. The amendment came before those societies last October in Wash- ington and they were in a position to act upon it yesterday. However, in view of the fact that some of the other socicties will have the amend- ment introduced for the first time at the sessions being held here, it was decided to lay the matter ove The annual business meetings of tho two socicties followed the gen- eral afternoon session, at which Re Irwvin L. Shaver, of Bostom, secre- tary of leadership training in the Congregational Iducation soctety, spoke on ‘“Leadership Training tor Religious Education,” and Rev. John L. S, ELECTIONS “WET Paris Papers Give Democrats Shars of Mention Tondon,Nov. 4 (P—In the absence of any big issuc appealing to popu lar interest here, the newspapers to day do not give extraordinary prom inence to the Americans. The larger papers, however, print detailed dis- patches of the situation, by some of the papers describe the ballot- ing as a “wet victory,” and “resent- ment against prohibition.” Editorial comment is scant.
