TAX RATE BOOST FOR NEW YORKERS Budget Report Indicates Highest Leyy Ever New York, Sept. 10 P—A s yesterday of items which the c departments have asked to have | cluded in the 1927 budget showed a total of more than $500,000, compared with this year's budget of $437,000,000. Mayor Walker hopes to pare this total considerably, but it is admitted at city hall that a cinimum budget of around $476,- 000,000, or an increase of $40,000 000 over this vear, is the best that can be expected. This will result in the highest tax rate in the history of the city. Next Tax Rate Probably $2.50 The basic rate for the current year s $2.68 a $100, to which are added the variable borough assessme rates. It now appears th vear's basic rate proba 1ot be less than $2.77 a $100, which means a probable average total rate of $2.79 or $2.80. This situation was presented to Mayor Walker several weeks ago afid he issued orders to all depart- ments to cut their estimates of next year's needs to the bone. In addi- tion, he instructed Charles L. Koh- ler, director of the budget, to trim estimates as ruthlessly as possible without impairing service of the de- partments. Neither the mayor nor the budget director, however, sees any possi- bility of slicing the 1927 budget to- tal under $476,000,000. NEWINGTON NEWS Walter Sorrow, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. J.
