GAINES 10 GIVE TESTIHONY TODAY " Father, Accused of Slaying Daughter, to Take Stand Seattle, Aug. 17 (P—With Wal- lace Cloyes Gaines due to testify today in his trial on a charge that he killed his daughter, Sylvia, when she tried to terminate an unnatural relationship between them, it was indicated that the case would go to the jury this week. The prosecution called 75 wit- nesses in ten days. The defense of- fered a score yeserday and announc- ed that Galnes would likely be its last direct witness. The defense opened its case yes- terday after the court refused a motion for a directed verdict of ac- quittal. Mrs. Elizabeth Gaines, the de- fendant's second wife, maintained her husband’s innocence through two hours of cross questioning by the state. She told of events pre- ceding the finding of the denuded body of the 22 year old Smith col- lege graduate on the night of June 16 on Aulake shore where the girl had been choked and beaten to death. She also testified as to Syl- via’s arrival here last fall from her mother's home in Lynfleld, Mass, after not having seen her father since her parents separated 16 years ago.
